The original presentation of the episodes especially on the DVD was really poor when you go back and look at them, especially season 1. It almost looks like it was shot on a home video camera. I would say the blu restoration puts season 1 more in line with the rest of the series now.

One cool thing they showed last night at the theatre was the hand drawn animation used for the conference room windows of Enterprise at the end of the opening credits.

Finally got mine from HMV's carrier pigeon mail service today, only watched the Naked Now but the quality looks phenomenal. Checked out the audio error on EaF too, its pretty distracting.

Always wondered how long they kept uncaptioned copies - the 2nd half of two part stories loose them in movie format. Some were released several years after airing.
Wouldn't they need to keep those around pretty much indefinitely, so they can do translations for foreign sales?

When the official site streamed episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 2010 or 2011 those were unaltered copies of the tapes they used to send out to international stations. After the end of the episode the opening credits, the first scene, the last scene and the ending credits were repeated creditless so that the stations could replace the footage if they wanted to.
If a kids show show like Power Rangers did that I'm pretty sure a big show like Star Trek did it too.

Watching The Naked Now, just stunning.

Got my copy for $39.99, because of Best Buy's screw up last week. :techman:

Hopefully the audio problem won't bother me too much. The sound from my HDTV is so good that I usually have that turned up higher than my actual surround sound system anyway.

Picked up my copy this morning. Going through the documentaries now. Seeing Data's makeup tests reminded me that I've got some old Galoob Data action figures that were made with different skin colors. I guess these were done before they had finalized Data's makeup.

As far as the season 2 trailer, I am perplexed as well at changing the color of the D's impulse engine from orange to red for the second season shots.

There have been some comments on the footage from the "The Child." Somehow the color of the ship seems flat - doesn't reflect the blue of the planet. They did some great work for this episode. The shuttlecraft launch (not shown in the trailer) was certainly ambitious for the time - though flawed with what you should actually be able to see out of the shuttlebay. I'm looking forward to seeing it in HD.

I guess it's a case of YMMV on this. Downmixed to stereo through TV speakers I guess the impact of the errors are fairly negligible (although presumably, even a stereo downmix of EAF would be right channel "weighted" - haven't tested it). I'm yet to hear the remaining incorrectly mixed episodes, but the aforementioned DTS Master Audio mix on EAF sounds horrible on my 7.1 system - and it's a major disappointment for me.

Yes I have the sampler, but we really shouldn't be discussing lax encoding errors of this type on such a high profile major release. The shine has decidedly been taken off my initial excitement for this box set, and I guess it'll be further diminished as I preview the other mistakes - and there's no sampler fallback for those. :weep:

Even with the unfortunate errors, this set is light-years ahead of the season one DVD set I own. I am pleased with the purchase. :techman:

I totally get your unhappyness about this. I guess I'm fortunate enough to be rather ignorant about audio, so it doesn't bother me that much ... well, the EaF problem does, but I think I can take the channel bleeding in the others and loss of directionality.

My biggest gripe is how cheap the packaging is. Would it send CBS spiraling into economic ruin to spend an extra ten cents on a legitimate episode insert?

I haven't purchased may dvds or blurays recently, but I thought the inserts were a thing of the past. They've always irritated me, because they're easily lost or damaged. They were a pain in the butt with the TOS DVD release. I haven't picked my copy up yet, but I'm not disappointed at all with the lack of an insert.

Here in Germany you can actually get a "Steelbook" collector's edition for just 1 Euro more. However, the downside is that it only comes out on August 20th for some reason (the normal set hits on the 26th).

I knew that underside shot of the ship from Farpoint wasn't the original model! Wasn't CGI but a matte painting.

Surprised none of the many review sites picked up on this audio problem (or at least made a big deal out of it). I wonder if they got special preview copies that didn't have this problem or something....

Everyone probably thought Farpoint had just been ported over from the sampler and didn't even look at it. I had asked about and Mike Okuda responded that there were no changes in the episode on the season one set.

It seems unlikely they'd put up the costs of re-authoring the entire set just for the press. I would imagine they're all the same. It's much more likely that these reviews were done rapidly and they didn't pay as close attention as we fans are now that it's available.

What did change was the authoring of the disks. It's likely the same contents, but CBS decided to do the season sets in-house, unlike the sampler which they gave to another company. They're authoring must have been flawed, even thought the source files are the same.
