Do you like ds9

DSN and TNG are somewhat similar in that they both had weaker S1-2, copared to what came later. Though on a whole DSN's S1-2 where better than S1-2 of TNG. I think one key difference is that DSN managed to sustain the quality better than TNG did in the later seasons.

DS9 is the shining jewel in the crown of modern Star Trek - head and shoulders better than TNG and not even in the same ball park as Voyager...

Not putting it on too high of a pedestal there, are you?

DS9 is much like every other Trek, including TOS. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's really bad. And a large chunk of it is mediocre.
It's just an opinion, it's mine and I stand by it.

I love TNG, I love DS9 more. I'd rather watch/read DS9 than anything else Trek, but I do watch/read it all. Even Voyager...

Yes, I liked the heavy use of the small Runabouts as a primary starship. DS9 space station with Runabouts felt reminiscent of the '70s Space:1999 Alpha Base with Eagles.

Hmm. That's an analogy I hadn't thought of before.

Good catch.

I thought it was the worst of the series.

There are certainly some moments (e.g. The Visitor, Hard Time, Trials and Tribble-ations) that rise above.

I won't spoil anything other than to say that I found it to be too reliant on interpersonal melodrama, pseudo-religious nonsense, and at times, unintentionally funny. I also think Brooks chewed the scenery to Shatnerian proportions far too often.

All that said, watch the series and decide for yourself. Many people on this board say it's the best series, so what the hell do I know...

In S1, watch Emissary, Battle Lines, Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets.

If you still don't like DS9, then that is because DS9 is not for you. So stop watching.

.

That's a pretty good selection, although I don't remember "Battle Lines" as well.

DS9 is definitely its own thing, and has its own unique take on Star Trek, but that's what makes it worth watching. Who says every Star Trek show has to look and feel the same?

I used to really like DS9 and own all the DVD's however I find it hard to rewatch. To many unhappy endings. I prefer to rewatch episodes of TOS, TNG or VOY which have uplifting endings for the most part and don't make me depressed like a lot of DS9 can. I find the last version of BSG difficult to rewatch for similar reasons. If I'm going to waste time watching TV why waste my time on something that will depress me?

Yes. Yes I do.

Judging an entire series based on one episode is a little short-sighted (IMHO) and if you got into VOY because of that, then DS9 will blow you away.

Great premise. Great characters. Great acting. Great writing...you see where I'm going with this :)

The whole religious aspect of DS9 takes up way too much of the series IMO. As an athiest l prefer Roddenberry's more godless view of the universe, where the supernatural is actually debunked by science and technology, as often happened in TNG, and in Star Trek V, for example. Having been an athiest himself, l can't understand what Gene was thinking when he gave the go-ahead for DS9.

Another DS9 fan, it's also my favourite series by a country mile.

I'd be interested to know what episode you saw and if there was anything specific about it that didn't grab you.

I never found the Bajoran religion to take up too much time in the series. I have a low opinion of all religions (I understand that some people hold them in high regard and find strength and purpose in them, but to me they're all just cults, but thats not the point) but episodes that dealt with matters of the Prophets and faith didn't bother me. It was something never really touched on with Trek and that could be explored because the station was going anywhere and their religion was an important aspect for many Bajorans.

Besides, it gave us Winn Adami, who is possibly one of the best adversaries in Trek (IMO).

All this talk of DS9 makes me want to break out my boxsets...so I think I will.

Deep Space Nine tried to much to be TNG with a twist in it's earlier season(s). Starting from season 3, you can tell the writers gave DS9 its own identity, and the show really hit its stride.

But, I will also say, seasons 1 and 2 had some of the best episodes of DS9, hell even of Trek in general, if you ask me.

No, that's an accurate description.

No, it's really not.

Here's an idea.... stop telling people to agree with you. I agree that perhaps Temis is also stating her opinion a bit to much like a fact, but I've read some of your recent posts on DS9, and you just really want everybody to feel the same way you feel about DS9. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but some of us won't. Some of us, and I'm so sorry to offend you with this, actually love DS9 (shock and horror!!!!).

I know that baffles you, but if people feel that way about DS9, how about doing something that Trek is supposed to teach us, and respect how others feel about it?
I respect the fact that you feel this way about DS9, no worries. But let others just like it the way they do.

l share your opinion on religion, and much like you l understand the purpose that it serves, and the desire for many to cling to their faith.

Let me just say that the religious episodes don't actually "bother" me. l'm pretty comfortable in my disbelief. l'm not one of those militant atheists who is offended by the word "God". Hell, l even love to watch biblical epics such as The Ten Commandments and The Greatest Story Ever Told. But one reason that l do love Star Trek so much is because of the atheistic future that it portrays, in which mankind has attained a level of reason, where science has brought us beyond the need for any contrived myth-legends. And going into Star Trek with that frame of mind, l'll admit that the whole Bajoran prophecy thing- while it doesn't kill the show for me- it does sort of bog me down somewhat.
