50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twilight

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

My theory is that the initial buzz came from the internet stories about the sexy Twilight fan fiction, and as soon as the idea of this being the next big thing caught on, people bought it, actually making it the next big thing.

Soooo... all the 60 year old mums are buying it because the buzz from internet...?

I don't believe you can surpass Harry Potter and Twilight just with this :)

Here in Italy is the number 1 not-italian bestseller and I assure you none know about its roots as Twilight fan fiction! :)

http://www.examiner.com/article/fifty-shades-of-grey-tops-harry-potter-as-fastest-selling-book-ever

This is the first time I've heard of this. Apparently these books, starting with 50 Shades of Grey, have become the next book phenomenon and holds the title of fastest-selling novel beating Harry Potter and Twilight. They are now even going to be turned into movies.

I can understand Harry Potter and Twilight getting popular. One has a boy learning he is a wizard and going to a magic school, while the other has a vampire and a teenage girl falling in love with each other.

But this? I glanced at the plot of the first book it looks like it is just romance with a bunch of BDSM sex. Amusingly this series started out as Twilight fan fiction.

How did these books get so huge? Has anyone here read them or seen others reading these books?

My girlfriend never like Harry Potter, but she loves 50 Shade of Gray . We can not believe that it did better than Twilight that is unreal :(.

I saw some woman in WH Smiths the other day buying all three books. My first thought was, isn't it a risk to buy all three when you might not even get into the first? My second was how huge they are! The nature of the books aside I just envisage there must be some kind of global conspiracy sub plot to justify the wordage!!

A friend of mine was explaining some of the sex scenes to me the other day, my neice was wittering on on Facebook about getting it to see what all the fuss was about, and there was even some woman on the bus today wafting it around! It's every bloody where!

As a writer with pretentions of making it someday, I find the entire thing both incredibly depressing and yet curiously uplifting at the same time.

Now you know all you have to do is write a book that's basically a mid-life crisis and it'll sell.

Yes but it has to be mid-life crisis with soft porn.

Well I'm about the right age...

But I'm a bloke, so it'll be classed as porn, not 'erotica'.

And an uplifting feminist message, such as you can get a rich guy to give you a good seeing to by being kinky.

A bloke having a mid-life crisis with a book full of sex would be sick filth. For women it's classy though.

I'm guessing these books are aimed at the cougars who have nothing to accompany their Michael Buble CD, scented candle and pick 'n mix vibrator collection in the hiatus between Twilight books.

You have your copies on order then?

Only because you didn't want them arriving at yours with the family looking on.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

Shush, they know I come here, unlike half the people here, so they might read that.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

I am gonna wait for the audio version(s) myself:D:p

Anyways..I read about the books on an article on the BBC News website, last week. Never heard about these before that.
If people like to buy and enjoy reading them, then I do not have anything against that.
Not something I would however place on top of my personal reading list..

I'd agree on the size, I ordered it from Amazon expecting a fairly thin book (seen as every one seems to have read all three in a short amount of time) but was surprised how chunky it was.

Again, can't say the sex scenes shocked me really. Compared to the sex scenes in American Psycho they're very tame :D
For example, the chapter "girls"

If women in their 40s+ are indeed the main readers I guess I could see how they might find it a bit blush worthy, having not grown up with internet access and porn so easy to access like kids have nowadays

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

The first 80 pages are free on amazon and I decided to check it out. Couldn't make it through the first 40 pages due to the awful prose. My favorite was the fact that the narrator was a fan of British classic literature but can't be bothered to actually name any book or even a time period. Forget that the narrator obviously wasn't a reader of anything beyond People magazine, but I also suspect that James just couldn't think of any literature.
