^ Ah, what's in a century or two! Now excuse me, my fingers are getting awfully sore from pressing down the telegraph.

^ Dunno, I just watched the scene again, and while the mask is certainly grounds to go "hmm", neither it nor his behavior seem very menacing or oppressive to me. The mask alone is certainly dehumanizing, but his gait mostly just looks like his butt hurts from the chase, not very mechanical or aggressive at all. The voice also doesn't really sound very telltale robot-y. There's that filter, yeah, but the variable speed of the delivery and the timbre just sound human. OTOH, it's a bit odd that he goes "citizen, ..." not "yo kid, ...".

Ultimately I think it's a very odd scene that's definitely sending some mixed signals, but nothing conclusively into the direction you're chosing to peg it as.

So this is what "Casey the friendly cop" looks like?

http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/xihd/trekxihd0366.jpg

No sign of humanity.

That's kind of a speciesist thing to say. For all you know, he may well not be Human. Maybe, as I've speculated, he's just a non-Human with different atmospheric needs.

It lools more like something from the post atomic horror than something you'd find in rural Iowa.

Didn't your mother ever teach you not to judge others based on their looks?

I mean, sure, he looks intimidating, sure. He also looks intriguingly alien, since it seems as though he only has one visual cluster rather than two eyes.

But what did he do that was so awful?

This. Quoted for truth.

Thanks for paying us a visit over here!

The chapter 1 excerpt was a pretty fun read. I've been having a bit of a guilty pleasure YA thing going on this year, reading through the Hunger Games and Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker alongside the Vanguard series and other books; I think I'll continue that thread by picking up this one.

Thanks! Starfleet Academy: The Assassination Game is officially out, so...woohoo! I put in a few references to ST:TOS in my book, which I hope people enjoy.

Oh, and I loved Shipbreaker. Great stuff.

Got my copy today along with the new ds9 novel great week for star trek.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Whoa, fairly substantial book! 300 pages!? That's about 1/3 longer than the other tree before it. It arrived today and the cover looks a lot better in person than in the images. And the McCoy image on the back is excellent.

TOS Easter Eggs, eh? Can't wait to find them!

Agreed. I think it's also worth considering that he is a cop, and even if he's not the arm of a totalitarian regime, he's still not going to be skipping around with daisies in his hair. Even if it's not a dark dystopian world, you're still going want you're police officers to be intimidating.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

I have the first 3 books

1. The Delta Anomaly by Rick Barba

2. The Edge by Alan Gratz

3. The Germini Agent by Rick Barbra

Out of all these 3 books, The Edge was by far my favourite.

The Delta Anomaly was just fair...it’s hard to remember the story in details.

The Germini agent was quite good. It would have been great if Rick Barba kept the pace of the story ...the story kind of crumbled in the end.

However there is one thing that I didn’t like much and that was Rick Barba’s writing. he used the word SAID a lot in both books; it was quite bad. I felt like I was reading the same page over and over again.

Alan Gratz is by far the better writer which is why I am definitely looking forward to this new book since he was the one that wrote The Edge which is the best book in the seiries.

The Edge was not written by Alan Gratz, it was written by Rudy Josephs. And as far as I know, Rick Barba is a man.

Also, does anyone else think it's weird that the authors don't get their names on the covers? I think it's kind of tacky. Like, they wrote it! I did notice that this book has a dedication though, which is cool.

Alan agreed to do an interview about the new book for my blog, in which he talks about some of those TOS references, sporks, Section 31, and more! You can read it here: linky.

Yeah I don't like that, seems kind of rude.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

I believe someone suggested it was so they would all be lumped together on shop shelves, rather than spread out by author's name.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

^That's odd, since Trek books are usually shelved together anyway.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Yeah, that's how they are everywhere I can think of. No other reasons come to mind

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Yeah, most multiauthor series I've come across do seem to be placed together on most of the store shelves I've come across.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Just finished AG and had to post that this is by far the best of the nuTrek YA books to date. Well written, fast paced (read it in one sitting), and the author completely nailed the voices of the characters. THIS is what the YA novels should always be like... Highly recommended.

My sole complaint: the absence of the author's name on the front cover. He more than deserves the recognition and accolades.

The best Trek I've read all year -- YA or regular.

Thank you, Mr. Gratz: I look forward to SEEING your name on many future Trek-related books!

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Is not putting the authors name on the book a new thing? I don't think I've ever come across a book without the author's name (or at leas a name) on the cover somewhere.

Re: SFA: The Assassination Game by Alan Gratz Review Thread (Spoilers!

Hello
I was searching some infos about this book and I did find this board.
I've read the book this week and I liked it very much so I voted for "outstanding" because I think that it's, by far, the best of the series. It's well written and the story is interesting.
I appreciated the fact that it's consistent with the other books too so, aside from being a standalone story that you can read regardless if you read the other books, it can also be a continuation of those other novels and if you read them all it's nice to have this connection between them.
As for the characters and their personal arcs I have to admit the Spock and Uhura bits are by far my favorite parts and characters. They're interesting because they're a challenge with a lot of potential and because they're one of the few really "new" things to develop in this alternate reality. I like the idea that life is really just a matter of chances even the ones that you don't take (in this case TOS S/U) because the circumstances were simply different.
Without putting spoilers I liked how the author explored that relationship and kept both of them in character. Their story arc is realistic and believable (moreso if you read the other books too) and added more depth to the whole thing. It made me want to read more about them for sure. If I can be more specific, I liked the contrast between her "humanity" that makes her feelings more obvious and his "vulcanity" that makes his feelings more subtle but no less important or profound than hers.

The only thing I didn't understand is when this story happened. Months before the events of the movie? Years?

Young adult fiction, especially franchise YA fiction, is usually published without a name. Sometimes this is only contained on the page with the ISBN, place of publsihing, etc. This was a pain in the library I worked in last year when people requested YA fiction by the same author, or for similar reasons
