Who is Captain Kirk?

David F. Weisma

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Hey, don't kick me out of the forum yet. I know who he is. It's just that, when I was young and first saw the original series, I sort of thought of Kirk as a flirt, but not constantly having sex with everything that moves and is female. I've readjusted my vision since the world is pretty much unanimous that I'm wrong, but is there anyone else who ever had that impression? Just curious. I mean we know he wasn't that outgoing in school, at least at the time of Finnegan.

I'm in my early twenties so I wasn't around when TOS was first showing, but I've been a fan of Trek from an early age and TOS was the show which I was first exposed to. To answer you question, as far as Kirk's flirting went I simply categorised this in the same breath as James Bond. Both characters are classic action heroes (well Kirk was up until the movies) and classic action heroes are portrayed as being irresistible to women and having a weak spot for them.

The following article on Orionpress explores, in part, this very question:

In answer to the thread question, I tend to think that a lot of time when he “boldly goes” (;)), he seems to be doing it as a means to gain some advantage. It isn’t usually just some randoming flirting. There are definitely occasional times when he enjoys it though.

Kirk definitely isn’t a chaste hero, but he isn’t by any means the womaniser that some have made him out to be.

This seems to pretty much answer the question. The question that nags me is; Jim Kirk: Fearless Leader, Space Cowboy or Tyrant?

I recall that quite a few times, Kirk putting the moves on a female was often a means to defeat an enemy or gain an advantage in an alien confrontation or something else.

Does it make a difference if Kirk's sexcapades were part of a plan to defeat an enemy or if they were solely for his own gratification? Or no difference?

He was the lead in an action adventure series made in the 1960s. Of course he was a ladies man. Which doesn't mean he was an uncaring user of women.

Also, I don't think being bullied by Finnegan as a underclass man or being known for being as a tough instructor as upperclassman/postgrad means he didn't have time for romance as a cadet or was the shy introvert type.

Kirk wasn't a womanizer, but he didn't take a vow of celibacy either. But as captain, his romantic exploits were front and center in the series, while the others--not so much. As a result, Kirk comes across has having a more active libido than anyone else on the ship.

For all we know, though, Chekov may have had a more active love life than Kirk, but his shipboard romances were never shown onscreen.

Star Trek XI presents us with a distilled version of Kirk.

James Kirk, James Bond and James West (hey, wait a minnit...) probably did more to screw up my view of relationships than anything else. All the while I was growning up in the 60s, I watched these guys nail every chick they met (one way or the other). When I hit my teens, I was really confused to discover that life didn't really work that way, and girls actually DIDN'T like it when I tried to act like my heroes.

So we have two people who consider him to be like James Bond, who certainly had Pussy Galore (dear moderator, it's a name of a movie character!). If he did it for some advantage, then he might not necessarily have jumped in the sack with every one afterwards, especially if he knew there would be hurt feelings when he left. So there is some hope for my original view of the series, although I guess I had to accept the change to read many of the novels. Thanks, everyone.

I'm well-aware of the identity of Pussy Galore. My husband is a huge Bond fan. ;)

Kirk is a little more sensitive than Bond. Kirk, when he does fall for a woman, falls pretty hard. He's even been known to have regrets.

Kirk is Jung's individuated (undivided) man, with balance between animus (wisdom/Spock) and anima (passion/McCoy). He is literally seated in the center of wholeness (the squared circle that is the bridge), the enterprise known as the human adventure, just beginning.

pause . . . That's what Kirk is, Charlie Brown.

"He's just this guy, you know," Gag Halfrunt, brain care specialist. ;)
