Uhh, Jamie was introduced in a story called "The Highlanders." I think he was supposed to be a Highlander. The Doctor Who Wiki agrees.

Yea, that's what I always thought, was that was extra ammo to be loaded, when he ran dryI'm sure the robot had to rearm itself from time to time, don't know why it needed the wire though but it was usefu l to the Doctor and Sarah Jane.
I always assumed that the Raston robot not only stored its ammo internally, but actually *generated* it that way as well. Meaning, it had a 'replicator' inside its body which would instantly produce any weapon or ammo it needed.
