Cartoon Network announces Teen Titans Go! series for 2013

From IGN:

The Teen Titans are returning to TV with new full-length episodes. The idea of bringing back the popular Teen Titans animated series was given a test run of sorts when Cartoon Network’s DC Nation programming block debuted New Teen Titans shorts this year, but now a new half hour series is coming, called Teen Titans Go! The press release stresses that this will be a very comedy-heavy series, saying it “shows the humorous side of being a teenage hero,” and that it will feature “the return of Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy and Cyborg in all-new, comedic adventures”

The full description says, “Character-driven comedy is the order of the day as this new take on the super hero series focuses on the funny business that happens between saving the world and living together as teenagers without adult supervision. They may be super heroes who save the world every day … but somebody still has to do the laundry! With the ability to turn into any animal or detach their robotic limbs, teenage pranks reach a whole new level. And even super heroes have to take Driver’s Ed. to get a license – especially after wrecking the Batmobile on an unauthorized joy ride to impress a girl!”

I was a big fan of Teen Titans, so I'm pleased as punch with this. :techman:

How come it seems like the trend is that everytime a cartoon series comes back the character designs get worse?

Hmm, not thrilled with this. What was cool about the original show was that it balanced goofy comedy with legitimate superhero action and often-intense character drama. This incarnation sounds a lot more narrowly focused.

Still, I really like the TT cast, who presumably will all be back for this, so maybe I'll give it a try.

I would've been much happier, though, to see Super Best Friends Forever be the first DC Nation short subject to graduate to a full series.

Or they could alternate the shows seasonally, show one pair of shows in the fall and another in the spring, say.

It could be Green Lantern will be cancelled.

Not like the stunted character designs. Just make them how they were or do a whole new take.

An expansion of SBFF would have been my first choice, too, but a Titans comedy show should be a lot of fun. Actually maybe the best move would have been an anthology show allowing the various shorts to expand to longer running times.

Actually it seems to me this Titans show is a comedy specifically so its not competing with Young Justice as presumably two quasi-serious shows about young DC superheroes on the same network is one too many.

They won't put two shows with so much in common on at the same time. Same way they cancelled the YJ comic in favor of returning most of the cast to the Titans book.
As has been pointed out, the two shows aren't going to be much alike at all. Plus they could keep them separate by airing them at different times of the year and partnering them with Green Lantern and/or Beware the Batman.

But as I said before, the previous Teen Titans already was a comedic treatment of the premise, and couldn't have been more diametrically opposite to YJ in tone and approach -- but it also featured some pretty kickass action-adventure and often-poignant characterization within its goofy, cartoonish framework. It sounds like this show, much like the current shorts, is going to be more strictly focused on sitcom antics and everyday life, without a lot of attention paid to the actual crimefighting.

Uhh, you must be referring to the original DC Young Justice comic, since the comic based on the TV series is still being published. In which case it's a spurious comparison because you're talking about two different "they"s. The shows under the DC Nation label may be based on and branded as DC Comics properties, but that doesn't mean they're made by the same people who publish the comics. They're produced by Warner Bros. Television Animation at the behest of Cartoon Network. All under the same corporate umbrella, but managed by different people.

And as others have said, there really isn't much similarity between the YJ and TT shows. YJ is serious action-adventure skewing to a 12-and-up demographic, while TT is comedy skewing to younger children.

I never imagined I'd enjoy the original TT when the first previews and so on came out so I'm willing to keep an open mind but based on what I'm seeing here I don't think I'll care much for this one. Never know though, even that Marvel Super Hero Squad has its moments. For different audiences and all...

Sadly, that's my interpretation as well. I'd had hoped that with the success of the original Teen Titans and the two Avatar series networks would realize that kids enjoy drama just as much as comedy. Maybe even more so. Going back to the maturity of Superfriends is not a good idea.

It's just one comedy show, though, giving the block some variety. Young Justice, Green Lantern, and Beware the Batman are far more serious.
