Pegg and Yeltin in militar uniforms

We don't even know why they're wearing those uniforms. Let's not judge too quickly.
I was thinking the same thing...

Most of those pictures were obviously taken NOT during filming. The story even says many of those pictures were taken at the "cast farewell party" after principle photography was complete. So, even though I have no idea why Yelchin and Pegg would be wearing uniforms if not as movie wardrobe, there is a chance those uniforms were NOT pieces of movie wardrobe.

Maybe they were wearing those as some sort of cast wrap-party joke, or maybe a little cast party skit that Pegg and Yelchin performed, just for fun.
Or the pictures taken with Pegg and Yelchin were taken earlier, just as the last scene in production was being filmed.

Exactly...We simply don't know.

Except they looked pretty darn nice to not be wardrobe (as in, having those made exclusively "for fun" would've been damn expensive -- and to what end, really?).

Thing is, with all the different muted-color and more tailored "suit-looking" uniform types we've been seeing (both in ST09 and in pictures of the next movie leaked so far) it's the TOS-authenitc blue, red, and gold tunics that are beginning to stand out as different and out of place.
Compared to the other uniforms, the TOS throw-backs seem like the garish daily color-coded work-duty jerseys the navy wears on aircraft carriers. Maybe that's the contrast between uniform types they're actually trying to create in the movie.

In the British Royal Navy they have Dress No 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
1. Dress uniform.
2. Mess uniform.
3. Formal uniform.
4. Informal work clothes.

I presume other navies like the US is similar.

So these grey uniforms could be the dress uniforms and the gold, blue and red tunics the casual shipboard work uniforms.

How many times have I watched The Cage or the Menagerie and I never once noticed the hat!!

Pike's hat here:

Annnnnd is the hat in the lower photo the actual costume piece or a later recreation based on the show?

Excellent! You can't tell the difference! Exactly what I'm after; I must be doing my job.

We're pretty rough on our props and costumes; I try to not use original Trek collectibles in actual productions. The above hat is simply a reproduction made after study of the original Pike hat which was sold recently at auction.

It's not that I can't tell the difference per se...it's just that the hat is not very clear in the episode, and I've never seen a clear photo of the actual piece, hence my question.

Is there a pic from this auction someplace?

Given that it's Greg who posted it, my guess would be "later recreation, based on the show". It does seem to me that the bill on the reproduction is longer, like that of a modern baseball or trucker hat, while the cap in the screengrab has a shorter bill, similar to that of a WWI US Army uniform cap, say, or of any of a number of (US) policeman's uniform hats from the earlier half of the 20th century.

Edit:

Question already answered definitively. Oh, well.

The original Pike hat, like the reproduction, is a Marine Corps, eight-pointed, utility fatigue cover, like this standard-issue one:

The bill on Pike's hat is actually longer than it looks. Due to foreshortening from the direct front-on view, it's difficult to see in the screen shots the bill's true length. (The shot of my hat is almost perpendicular to the bill, so it looks much longer.) When you put my hat on a table and get a straight front-on view of it like in "The Cage" (like we did in "Enemy: Starfleet!"), it looks just fine.

Original hat was sold at auction; yes, there are pictures of it somewhere. But here's an ever-so-slightly clearer shot of it from "The Cage:"

On first glance, these hats in combination with the bland uniform just felt evil to me. I then noticed the starfleet logo and the very first thought that came to my mind was "Mirror universe?"

TNG dress uniforms were awful, the later white uniforms in DS9 and Nemesis were great but now looked llike mess dress.

I'm starting to wonder, too. But in a way, they're not evil enough for the MU. Those folks would never have gone in for something brown and blah, and sadly lacking in gold lamé.

The MU is the last thing I would expect them to use in any movie. It would be a huge risk - easier to see it being laughable than anything else.

I was looking closer to see if the cut of these uniforms were similar at all to Pike's gray & white uniform, but actually they look even more similar in cut the TMP uniforms than that.

Well, to be honest, I don't mind them as either a variant or replacement for the cadet uniforms, these obviously being either officers dress or some sort of formal variant.

Not too sure on the hats though.
