Anyone else sick of Star Trek fans being called "geeks"?

Is anyone else as fed up with this term as I am? Now I am not an angry person by any means, but why do people who are not Trek fans insist on calling us fans of the franchise, geeks? I mean honestly. There are a lot of things that people who aren't a fan of the franchise can learn from it, it is intelligent and has all of the other things in life including, comedy, love, honor, rebellion, evil, good, etc. So why do people wrap up Star Trek's many years of brilliance and success as something enjoyed by a bunch of geeks? This doesn't bother me or anger me just irritates me to a certain extent. Thoughts?

Personally I'm not at all bothered by the use of the term "geek." I wear my geekdom proudly, as a badge of distinction. I enjoy being a geek.

I'm disappointed that more people don't appreciate Trek as much as we do. But as far as being called a geek? Doesn't bother me at all.

Take advise from Uhura, words are only words, they can't hurt you if you don't let them, why should someone be upset by words?

Plus, most of the folks who use Geek as an insult towards us, have their own "issues" to overcome. Geek kids will often fare far better financially later in life, then anyone who deemed it appropriate to insult them with "Geek"

Embrace the geek label. Geeks have risen up to a more socially acceptable place in our culture.

The only thing that bothers me is just the lack of consistency. Sorry but game of thrones and vampire stuff is just as "Geeky" as star trek, but it's in vogue right now, so crap like that gets a pass. The Star Trek 2009 movie seemed to help with the "geek/social outcast" image a little bit, but I maintain that it was so different from the rest of the franchise that it did nothing to help the "geek/social outcast" image of the prior versions of star trek. it just stood out as the only non geeky one.

Geek implies we're smart. All you have to do is look around here to know that's not true...

Doesn't bother me that much.

What bothers me slighlty more is the double standard that is applied, it's ok to be a fan of a sports team but not of a TV show.

Oh, you can be a fan of a TV show...as long as it's the right TV Show

I have good friends, a great family, a cool job, fun hobbies - and I am a geek. Nope, it doesn't bother me at all.

Geek, nerd, whatever. It's a label I wear proudly and don't care what anyone else thinks. It's when people start getting mean-spirited about it like calling names like loser or weirdo and so on that is uncalled for. But just tell those people to go fuck themselves and carry on.

I was known as ThE geek at law school, the 40+ yo female geek. And I was proud of it. I encouraged others to acknowledge their geekdom, whether it was about ST, SF, music, or whatever. And if people made fun of it, I pointed out their ignorance of the issues raised in SF in general (like BSG's discussion of freedom fighter/suicide bomber) The intelligent ones said, "Really? they discuss that?" The idiots said, "Huh?" I made sure others heard their idiocy and occasionally commented, "Guess that's beyond your ability to understand, huh?"

Yeah, it IS liberating to know who you are and enjoy it. And helping other enjoy their lives more by accepting themselves is great.

I claim the title "geek" proudly. I am a fan of science fiction, fantasy, comics, film. I collect comic books. I participate in the TrekBBS.

Geeks currently rule the planet. Why would I be sick of it?

I am geek! Here me roar!
