The Dorito Taco.

Can't get myself to try the Dorito Taco, but I love Taco-in-a-bag:

Take a bag of Doritos (the small, luchbox size), crush them up a little and throw in taco meat, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, whatever else you want, mix it up and eat it with a fork.

The fine dining for stoned, poor, dorm-dwelling boys everywhere. ;)

Honestly, I never ran into that until a couple years ago. (I'm 37) Granted, I've never lived in a dorm.

It sounds like a great idea. Haven't tried it. Taco Bell goes through me like... Ugh! What was that Chris Pine disaster movie? Oh yeah!

'This Means War'.

I have absolutely no idea what you guys are talking about. :lol:

You see, it's a taco, covered in a Doritos tortilla chip shell:

What are we talking about? Only the greatest innovation in food wrapping science since KFC discovered you can use chicken as the bread on a sandwich:

I can already sense Carrie's scorn about American food from across the Atlantic and the breadth of the continental US. It pleases me.

We use Fritos here, and we call them "Walking Tacos", but same thing, and yes, they are delicious. :D

Tried one yesterday. Tasty, but a colossal mess with orange powder everywhere after you are done.

I'm actually going to attempt to make a "real" Dorito taco by making my own taco shells and my own Dorito dust/seasoning to make something vastly closer to a Dorito chip than what Taco Bell has come up with.

One thing Doritos are really good for is meatloaf.

Seriously.

I hate meatloaf, unless it's made with Doritos instead of crackers.

Now I want some.
What? What is this tasty sounding madness?!

Do you use nacho cheese or cool ranch? Or one of the goofy other flavors? Do you crumble the chips? And how small? And what size bag of Doritos replaces a box of stuffing (which is what I use in meatloaf)?

So many questions, so much potential!

I'm not interested in using Doritos in any cooking, but what kind of seasonings do you think you're going to use? I would have no idea how to approximate what they use, so I'm curious. Let me know if you come up with something, or even if it's something different but delicious.

Right now I'm thinking of trying various seasonings and such used to make tacos. I don't use those taco-seasoning packets when I make tacos and instead make up my own, so I'll go from there. Paprika and Chili Powder are the two bigger ingredients I can see using.

EDIT:

Okay.

So I did a quick test and I think I came out okay on my first try. There's a couple more ingredients I think I need to get (for one I don't have any chili powder on hand) to try it out but my first try... Came fairly close. It misses a certain "snap" of Dortios but for a first try...?

For the "cheese taste" I used a packet of the cheese powder from a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

Ah, someone who appreciates my culinary delights! :lol:

Use any flavor you like, it really doesn't matter. I think it takes about half a normal-sized bag per pound of ground beef. I admit I typically eyeball it.

My recipe involves:

* 1 pound ground beef
* 1 egg
* Ketchup
* Mustard
* Barbecue sauce
* Doritos

Crumble the Doritos into small bits, like you would crackers. Mix it all together in a big bowl, of course. You could add salt, pepper, and onions, but I typically don't--the Doritos add enough flavor it shouldn't be necessary, and the barbecue sauce enhances it.

Spread the concoction into a casserole dish, then put a thin layer of ketchup on top. Bake it at 350°F for about an hour. Done and delicious!

So this is how you guys make meatloaf? Ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce? It sounds... a bit heavy on the taste buds, I would say. :eek:

My grandma's recipe involves just ground beef, egg, parmesan, a bit of milk, and bread crumbs.

Meatloaf has about 14,000 different variations, and everybody claims theirs is the best.

For instance, I would never use chips or crackers. I have always used breadcrumbs. I have a friend who uses oatmeal.

Whatever the recipe, my mom's meatloaf is the best meatloaf. :p

Oh, I agree (not about your mom's meatloaf, of course :p). I wasn't arguing that the recipe I know was "best" in any sense of the word. I was just surprised by the sauce-heavy ingredients. I always thought about meatloaf as a "light" meat dish (compared to, say, stew or roast).

The Doritos shell is actually made by Frito-Lay and sold to Taco Bell. The Doritos shell uses the exact same seasoning as a Nacho Dorito.

Same with the Flaming Hot Fritos used in the Beefy-Crunch Burrito.

Good luck creating a home-grown nacho-cheese seasoning analogue. If you're successful, I'll give you my business card.

Like they said, tons of variations. I put some ketchup on the top before baking, but I don't mix it in. And I use ground mustard in the mix, not a sauce.
