Audiobooks.

I love audiobooks...but I prefer reading, when I can. An audiobook can make a long ride alone in the car much less tedious.

why do I suddenly have images of dancing badgers stuck in my mind? And then there was the Harry Potter version (Snape, a Snape, oooh it's a Snape!).

I actually saw A Prairie Home Companion in concert at Wolftrap two years ago when I visited D.C. The audience interaction makes it quite different to just hearing it. In fact, my sister's boyfriend happened to take a picture as Garrison Keillor walked by during his performance.

Its coming to the Hollwood Bowl next month and I definitely plan on going to see/hear it as Keillor is retiring soon. I love that damn show!

I've never tried listening to an audio book, though I am going to give them a try. I just got a membership at my local library and noticed they had quite a few. I will start off with some Voyager novels at first and see if they can cure my insomnia.

Reading is actually the thing I go to when I can't get to sleep. Even though I love reading, if I do it in the afternoon or at night, I get quite sleepy. Usually I then wake up in the morning with the book still in the bed with me.

Radio dramatisations were mentioned up-thread; I love those and often listen to that sort or thing when I'm out and about... only a problem if it's really funny and I start LOL'ing and people stop me and ask what I'm listening to

Beyond news bulletins, etc. I'm not a fan of the spoken word if there's no visual accompaniment, whether it be discussion programmes, plays, talk radio or audiobooks. I only really listen to music, and even that only when multitasking with something else (most commonly, driving).

Unless you count Garrison Keillor, but in that case I just have spoken word recordings which are not really audiobooks.

Ah, another Prairie Home Companion fan! I don't have trouble concentrating on GK's monologues, because they're short enough and interspersed with enough music.

I like the joke episodes best.

Audio books bore the crap out of me.

Ditto. Radio shows, on the other hand, I'm totally cool with.
In fact I'm listening to Dark Adventure Radio Theater as I type.
