When Did "Tips" (Gratuities) Become So High?

I would absolutely call a man a whore if he was doing the same thing. I'd also call him a skank. These words, to me at least, are gender-neutral. A whore is a whore. I'm sorry if you don't like the word, but in some cases it is accurate.

I don't like the word "moist," but sometimes it's the most accurate word to use.

Those words are not gender-neutral to begin with. Sorry. And I don't believe you when you say you'd call a man a whore or skank.

I don't care if you believe it or not. I would. I don't live in this crazy sexist world that a lot of people seem to.

 Your lack of self-awareness is both hilarious and tragic.

Meh, "whore" generally has a secondary definition of simply being promiscuous rather than requiring payment, so RoJo, you're good there.

As for the rest... is the existence of the word "whore" with no decent male equivalent sexist? Probably. Is using it to refer to a particular woman who fits the definition? Nah.

TBBS hypersensitivity strikes again.

I don't believe the complainants were disputing the meaning of the term.

FWIW: It seems like an odd thing to criticize a person on. While strictly speaking a "whore" is a woman who is overly promiscuous or someone who has sex to money at the same time it's also can be used as just a "generic insult" to a woman's character without suggesting she actually has sex for money.

I mean when we call a man a douchebag we're not literally saying he's a key component to feminine hygiene products.

Gotta love the group of men on here that seem to instantly take the ultra-femanist position when things like this come up. Often more offended than the girls! Now we just need Hermiod in here to argue that it's unfair and 'reverse sexist' that we're only calling women whores... The word is out there, and not always used with sexist intent. Entertaining that we're now calling Rohojen a liar because our mind-reading abilities know what he intended better than he did...

Can we get back to the discussion of the people that bring us our food in exchange for the promise of our loose change (not whores? Doing something they see as demeaning and beneath them in exchange for the promise of money from people they don't appear to like...), and not the ones that are accepting special deliveries from the UPS guy? ;)

No, I'm not done discussing whores, or lack of such.

Good Lord...

TrekBBS: There is NO SUBJECT we can't turn into a personal argument.

Rubbish. If she was selling her body, she was a whore. If she was appearing in public naked - she was a trashy exhibitionist.

Not just appearing in public naked. Appearing in public naked at 7am in front of 9-year olds who are waiting for the school bus.

That would make her "best neighbor ever".

Ehhh. Depends on the look of the woman. Walking to the school bus one more a friend's mother stepped out onto the front porch shirtless to yell at him he forgot his bookbag. This woman looked like Rosanne Barr mixed with a healthy dose of Rosie O'Donnell.

Probably set back my sexual maturity by a decade.

Folks who just don't tip - well, they may as well just get used to being treated like shit, and they deserve it.

Interesting story there.

I once tipped $500 on a $600 bill. However, I've also walked out without tipping if the service is the shits (i.e. no water refills; constantly bringing us the wrong entree's and desserts; food is cold; bad attitude; etc...). Typically, I tip between 15%-20% though.

I do however, believe that tips are something that is earned for good service and not something you're entitled to... regardless of how the economics work for the restaurant or the server. Fortunately, I'm easy to please and 95% of the time I'll leave a good tip.

It seems to me that if servers have a problem with getting stiffed, they need to lobby governments to not allow restaurateurs to pass off the cost of labour onto the consumer. If wait staff want better pay and working conditions, the onus is on them to make it happen. That's how it works everywhere else, so don't expect special treatment for your crybaby sensibilities. Either that or change jobs. I went to university so that I wouldn't have to wait tables and thank the good Lord that I am fortunate and blessed enough to now have a well-paying job.

As someone mentioned before in this thread, waiting tables is a job that has a low value placed on it by society at-large (not accounting for higher end restaurants... let's assume diners, Red Robin, etc... for this conversation). So regardless of the fact that it most certainly is a difficult job to wait tables, society at large puts a lower economic value on it than say an engineer, foreman, doctor, etc...

They don't WANT to take away the tips and get better wages, though. They do better with the curent tip system. The problem is only brought up so they have a platform to complain from.

They'd just like it so that EVERYONE is a fantastic tipper, so they do even better...

Oh grow up. Men who pull up their skirts and start screaming at the sight of a fat woman are as bad as the whore brigade.

Bottom line: you get 15% if you do the bare minimum, less if you don't even manage that, and potentially much more if you provide great service.

I think that's pretty fair. I should also note that I include the tax as part of my tip calculation, which is apparently not how it's normally done, so I guess I am leaving a slightly higher tip already (since tax is usually 7%.)

This is the way I do it as well.
