People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Trek...

Re: People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Tre

I don't know, I wouldn't mind a USS Willy Brandt. Sure, those leaders might not appear as perfectly enlightened to people living in a fictional Utopia but some of them did things to be remembered benevolently or even celebrated. Even Gandhi and Mandela have their dark sides. It is an imperfect world, after all.

As I said, I may cut some slack for a couple of people for each country (I'd be thrilled to see a USS Giuseppe Garibaldi, just to give a partisan example). But in general, I'd say the less, the better.

But on the other hand, as a rule I'm not particularly fond of ships named after people.

Re: People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Tre

i named a ship USS Guiseppe Garibaldi in my fan-fic.

as for British PMs only one should be used: USS Winston Churchill

He's no longer with us, unfortunately, but how about Clyde Tombaugh -- who discovered Pluto?

I believe he just passed away a few years ago... :(

Cheers,

Did anyone mention U.S.S. Neil Armstrong yet?

Re: People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Tre

^ AFAIK, he already has a Trek ship named after him.

Re: People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Tre

ask yourself: how many French Presidents, British Prime Ministers, or Italian Chairman of the Council of Ministers do you think should be celebrated in Star Trek?
Might be a matter of how many ships they had that needed naming. And not just ships, the Enterprise's shuttles had some pretty important peoples names on them for "just" being shuttles.

USS Bill Gates.

:)

Remember - people *currently alive*. ;)

and in case you didn't know, neither are Garibaldi and Lincoln. we've been discussing naming ships after people generally. ;)

I hope you spelled it right in that, tho. ;)

pretty sure i did.

USS Rivera.

And yes, I'm aware of what just happened. :(

But they are the enligtened federation.

So does that mean every other president should be barred, too? Theodore Roosevelt increased US imperialism in Asia and elsewhere leading to a whole lot of colonial oppression and exploitation of native populations (whose effects are still felt today, over a hundred years later), and he encouraged eugenics of the social underclass, especially of the unemployed and the disabled -- and yet the Federation still saw fit to name a Starfleet vessel after him in Voyager. None of that seems very enlightened, but presidents and world leaders are fair game.

To be fair, it could have been the other Roosevelt. True, the Encyclopedia says it's Teddy, but FDR would be a better choice.

Hawking has had a shuttlecraft named after him.

I always thought Gen. Schwarzkopf deserved a ship.

They've had a USS Cortes, so they do name after some questionable individuals.

Re: People currently alive who would get ships named after them in Tre

^^^^That was named after Felipe Cortes, who was a great humanitarian and helped thousands of people in the mid-21st century, after the third World War.
