I wonder if we will see Davros in all of this, and how the different Daleks will get on, I seem to recall the new breed of Daleks not playing well with others in Victory of the Daleks.

Maybe it will lead to the creation of some form of Ultimate Dalek

Do you think the redesign was forced on them just so there would be new toys to sell?

hard to say, but it is safe to say those Progenitor Daleks have been a massive mistake.

I think they did it to have a story where there was a new generation of Daleks for a new Doctor. Having new toys is just gravy, but unlikely the main reason, IMO.

I never understood the fuss. Aside from the color, they've all always looked alike to me. Never noticed any differences.

^^The New Paradigm do have some obvious design differences.

apart from maybe the height there is not a single thing that is improved about the Paradigm Daleks, you could even accuse the eye stalk of being over designed.

Its just they have never really used the new Daleks, and this time round they seem to be using all the designs. It seems to me like they aren't that keen on them.

    That's a great cover.

With regards to the redesign, you can see why the decision was made and it's logical on a multitude of levels.

1.RTD era Daleks were (supposedly) designed so that Billie could look them in the eyestalk. Karen's a lot taller.
    2. The larger size also means a better ergonomic 'ride' for the operators.
    3. The larger size was also supposed to make them more menacing, to make them feel more like mini-tanks.
    4. As great as they were RTD era Dalaks were a trifle generic at times, so the variation in colour was a welcome change.
    5. There is probably a marketing angle, new Daleks in a multitude of colours = £££s

The problem comes in the execution. Rather than making them seem more formidable, the size increase makes them seem more cumbersome, and the colours are just a trifle too light and perfect, making them seem more like a range of options on a new car. "The new Dalek comes in Sunshine yellow, dazzling white, bold blue, radiant red and warm orange."

Having said that, the design's actually grown on me, and having seen them in the flesh (Dr Who Live) they are actually more imposing, unfortunately it doesn't neccesarily come across that way on screen.

as I said above I have no problem with the new height, but after that its all down hill.

maybe I speak as too much of a new series fan, but the RTDs Daleks were a great design, and one that worked in other colours as well, Dalek Sec looked awesome in black.

Looking at the picture, I do think one of them should have been the modern "Special Weapons Dalek" that would have accounted for some of the bulk.

^Yeah, I didn't care for that, either. Plus the new "fashion" colors are a bit much.

I didn't care for the design much myself. Of course, it wasn't helped out by the fact that the first story the new Daleks were in was terrible!! They mostly stood and around and talked! Not a good first impression!

The RTD design is my favorite. I thought they looked very solid and tank-like. However, they shouud never plan/build a longer term villian around a short-term companion. Short sighted. Although, the RTD Daleks would work fine with taller people I'm sure.

Yeah its been shown multiple times that the eyestalk can raise depending who the Dalek is talking to so tall people aren't an issue with them

Dalek Sec has been my favourite Dalek so far.
Something is just so cool about a Dalek in black.
(Can't see him in the picture though sadly...I guess he was only Black because he was Leader of the Cult of Skaro but was hoping for another Black 2005 Era Dalek)

Quite liked the Dalek Supreme too...even if he didn't do much but stand there.

the RTDs Daleks worked in every colour thrown at them, of course part of the problem with the Progenitor Daleks, is not the colour themselves, its the plastic look that they have, ok the colours are bright but they could be toned down without too much fuss.

I think Dalek Sec is behind the WW2 Dalek, which totally stole the show from the Progenitor Daleks.

Short term companions? Billie Piper was with the show for two seasons, and Karen Gillan for two and a half. That's longer than most nuWho companions.

I think the reason for why the Daleks were built for Billie Piper's height was to help her performance in the episode Dalek, while the New Paradigm were simply built for Gillan's height because she was the companion and the RTDaleks were designed for the current companion.

Companions are short-term compared to the Doctors, the series, and the Daleks. Building Daleks based on the height of the companion who will be gone in a couple of years is a bit silly.
