Trekkies or Trekker

The problem is, such distinctions are only meaningful to people who care about them.

From a practical point of view, "Trekkie" tends to be more useful in everyday conversations. If you're at a PTA meeting or neighborhood barbecue and you try to explain that, no, seriously, you're a "Trekker," not a Trekkie, people are just going to look at you funny.

Which, ironically, may be the opposite of what you intended . . . .

Yeah, they're going to think that anybody who's given that much thought to the subject has a couple of screws loose, and what's more, they may be right! :rommie:

Plus, proudly identifying yourself as a Trekkie suggest that you have a sense of humor about it--and aren't at all self-conscious or defensive about being a Trek fan.

"Trekkie" is the correct and original term. (Hence the name of the documentary)

"Trekker" is an awkward and self-conscious term invented by embarrassed folks who were somewhat ashamed of being associated with Star Trek fandom.
Although I hate it when people do this...

This.

The last time this came up, I thought it appropriate to quote W.S. Baring-Gould, an expert on the works of Arthur Conan Doyle.

He had to explain a similar dichotomy. He wrote something like:

"English Sherlockians call themselves Holmesians; American Holmesians call themselves Sherlockians."

And, properly, he did not address the issue further.

I agree!

It not only suggests that you don not take yourself too seriously but also that you are proud to be part of this one-of-a-kind group of obsessed fans who spend most of their days nitpicking episodes from a 60s TV series on an online message board. ;)

I agree Miss Lemon (and Greg Cox)!

I'll see your message board participation and raise you spending an entire warm, sunny weekend at a convention centre so I could listen to John de Lancie, Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn!

Most definitely a Trekkie and proud of it! :D

I got DeLancie's autograph at Shore Leave last year . . . which strikes me as a very Trekkie thing to do.

I usually stick with Trekkie, since it's more fun and informal. Never really seen the point in drawing a distinction between "Trekkie" and "Trekker."

Neither do I, except I think both terms are stupid and we should just call ourselves "Star Trek fans".

Straight and to the point, yes?

Boohooh, I guess I'm not nerdy er, cool enough to be worthy of the label Trekkie, since I've never been to a Star Trek convention. :weep:

I do have a lifesize cardboard Captain Kirk though... that must count for something, no?

Definitely. But I'll raise you a whole shelf of "Khan" merchandise: action figures, Christmas ornament, TV Guide cover, even a pewter replica of the Botany Bay!

you do know that you are not winning any argument but merely making yourself seem more sadder ?

I didn't think that was possible! :)

A Khan shrine?! I give up Greg, you are definitely the saddest Trekkie of us both!

Just wait until October when I will post pictures of myself at the London convention dressed in my self-made Moogie costume.

Where did "Trekker" ever come from? I remember it was Trekkie at first, and then some time after the Movies began (Could've been right after TMP or 10 or years later, I just remember it wasn't before TMP), I started hearing that Trekkie was derogitory and fans preferred the term "Trekker", but, judging from this thread, it seems most posters here prefer or at least have no problem with "Trekkies"
