I saw Jenna-Louise Coleman on the Titanic miniseries and think she is adorable. Her wiki article says she is going to be DW's next companion. Has this already happened if not when will she be on the show? Sorry if I am totally behind the times and this is old news.

I think I found my own answer. She is set to be introduced in the Christmas episode this year.

I look forward to her being on the show.

Although JLC's casting has been discussed at length in this forum (use the search feature to find the other threads), this is perhaps a good excuse to collect people's thoughts on how she did in the Titanic mini-series. I missed the show myself (I expect I'll catch it on DVD). I believe this is the first time a companion actor who isn't named Alex Kingston has appeared on US network TV before joining Doctor Who, but don't hold me to that.* (I don't count Kylie Minogue's musical performances!)

* Yes I know it's an ITV production, but it's a rare bird these days in that it's getting an airing on a commercial US network too. Normally they leave such stuff to cable and PBS.

I thought she did excellent on Titanic. Melted my heart. Can't wait to see her in Dr. Who.

i wouldn't bother with Titanic, word is it sucked hard and ratings sank faster than the liner.

Ratings are irrelevant for a movie. The only reason it sank was because it was a British production on American commercial TV. There hasn't been a successful British show airing on mainstream networks since The Avengers. It would have done just fine on PBS or a cable network.

And anyway, the quality of the film is irrelevant - for the purposes of this discussion we only care about how Jenna-Louise did. Vampira did a fantastic job in Plan Nine from Outer Space, too! ;)

I think he meant that ratings sank in the UK. Over the course of 4 episodes it lost half its audience and got ripped to pieces by the critics.

It's considered a bit of a joke over here and I doubt JLC is going to get much attention from it.

Oh and didn't NBC air Merlin for a short while?

im game for her... i'll be interested to see what they have planned for the character...

seeing as we don't know anything about who she'll be playing yet, the identity of the new companion is fully up in the air... what species, what time frame she's from... could be anything...

Personally i'm hoping she'll be playing Romana's 3rd Regeneration... or at least someone from a different time frame... sick and bored of companions coming from 21st century modern earth... lets have some excitement and interest back in the companions :D

I won't hold you to it, but no, she's not the first. For that matter, neither was Alex Kingston. Daphne Ashbrook was on Falcon Crest (CBS). John Barrowman was on C.P.W. (CBS) and Titans (NBC).

Jean Marsh was in a Twilight Zone in 1959. So unless William Russell can beat that...

And you know what, I wasn't sure what I was thinking when I typed my earlier comment. And yes, William CAN beat Jean - he starred in The Adventures of Sir Lancelot which aired on US network TV beginning in about 1956. So not only do we have a case of someone appearing in American network TV before being a companion, but he bleedin' headlined a show. (I think you'll even find some Dell Comics with him). So a big "never mind" from me!

looks like they thought they were filming Downton Abbey.

Pleased to see someone found her in Captain America.

Titanic was from the creator of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, a self-confessed 'Titanorak.' I believe that the sinking of the ship was referred to in DA's first episode (though I've never watched either show).

Yes, the first episode kicks off with the Earl of Grantham learning that his cousin and heir, Patrick, has died on the Titanic. The sinking of the Titanic sets in motion many of the plot complications in Downton Abbey, as the Earl's heir becomes a distant cousin, Matthew.

Just FYI, the Titanic mini-series is out on DVD and Blu-ray in North America today (April 24). JLC has pride of place on the cover.
