Working for love or for money? what do you think

I could double my income if I gave up my shenanigans in the store I work in and returned to a 'proper' office job in the finance industry.

The trouble is I love what I am doing at the moment. Managing a store is awesome. It never feels like 'work', it's just me doing what I do naturally.

Its hard work though, and the hours are long, and the pay is very little.

There's potential for a future here, and it could be lucrative. I might buy a franchise for example, or I might move up the food chain and become a bdm or a state manager. Those are possibilities.

Right now, I could literally double my income if I said 'that's enough play time, time to get back into insurance'

The hours would be more civilised, and I could attend those sporting events that I can't see at the moment because I am in store....

But the work itself sucks. I am not an 'office person'. Waking up early to get to the office at nine annoys me. Try as I might I can't 'get on' with office types. Sitting in front of a computer all day is unhealthy. I might be forced to post here a lot more often.

So there are advantages and disadvantages to both careers.

What do you value more, enjoying your job or being financially secure?

If you're unhappy because you're broke, then switch jobs. If you're happy and think it might be nice to someday have more money, then stay where you are.

I will never work an office again. It's so fucking boring! I started a new job roughly 2 months ago managing a bar, and I love it. I tried to so hard to get out of this industry a few years ago only to find myself back in it, and I couldn't be happier.

Do what you love. If you're working in an office, and it brings on all the associated stresses and emotional strain that it tends to do, you're shortening your life for a little more money. Staying where you are pays less, but you'll live longer.

Another vote for staying with what you love and building on it.

I could've made a lot more money in my life, but my priorities were doing work that I enjoyed and that did good, and I've never regretted it.

I joined the Army and have stayed in this long for love of the job. Nobody joins the Army to get rich. Stay doing what you love. I don't think the money would ever make up for that.

Yet another voice here in favour of staying. I'd suggest that being happy and content in what you do is far more rewarding than a payrise. And you have a realistic sense of that contentment - you can see the disadvantages of staying and the possibilities in moving, and you don't seem to expect to be completely settled. Reminding yourself of your options is always useful, but unless there's some particular goal in mind to which you strongly aspire, and for which you'd need extra cash, I wouldn't leave a position of relative comfort, myself. If you genuinely enjoy what you're doing then you're fortunate to have found a job that doesn't seem like a chore. Why pursue money when you're happy now?

Money tends to follow love; if you don't enjoy doing something, you tend to slack off at it, which in the long-term diminishes your maximum earning potential.

What would you do?

Find a way to do what I love while making more money at it. Go for the store promotions.

If you're happy in the store, then stay there. It's not often you find work that you really enjoy. I've had a couple of jobs where I really looked forward to going to work every day. I've had a few jobs that were the most miserable place on earth (anti-Disneyland).

Your priorities may change in the future, but for now, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

As long as you can live on what you make at the store, and aren't stressing over finances, then another vote for staying at the store. You can always go for the promotions there.

the only thing that bothers me about the first option is that you said there are 'long hours' at the store. Having more free time would be nice.

Is there a third option in which you could do something similar to what you are doing now with about the same pay, but fewer hours?

If it makes you happy, stay. Happiness in a job can be hard to obtain.

More money might bring more time to have fun, more fun purchases, etc, but it doesn't last.
