I can't agree with the TSFS votes - simply because I've never seen it as underrated by anybody before! :)

TFF has, as I recall, always been the most underrated film, however I have been pleased by reading all the positive comments on this thread. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, including the humour. Many of the Kirk/Spock/McCoy scenes had the flavour of the original series. The one thing I would like to have seen improved would be the SFX at the end. That's about it.

Another way to look at the special effects is to remember that the special effects for the original were never "stellar." Even after seeing Star Wars and modern special effects in recent years, (not considering the remastered original Treks), Most of us here still love TOS, and value it as a true classic.
So the shoddy special effects of STV are only so much of a problem, IMHO.

And where was it written or shown that EVERYONE is "snatched" up by the Nexus? Sure there is a line referenced by Scotty that the life signs were phasing in and out of the space-time continuum, but why the hell are you so sure that they all made it in there? what if they are phasing in at the same time the ship blows to pieces?....

Well we know Guinan and Soran made it in. Why would she and Soran make it in but not others?

I vote for ST III as well. Its scope was greater than its means, with a reasonable CGI budget today, it would be considered a great film. Having to shoot all the Genesis stuff on sound stages instead of on location and without CG enhancement bring the film down, but everything else is top-shelf.

ST V is fairly rated low, as are the other poorly rated TNG films. TMP is an interesting case.

Edit: and it is a good point about who is underrating it. Like DS9 is the most underrated series, but not on these boards, here it gets much love. I am voting for ST III as underrated by the general public.

As far as we know they were in our space-time enough for the transporter beam to lock on them and beam them out.
The other example is that it was an energy discharge that seemingly destroyed the hull on the E-B in the deflector control room, Did Kirk get whooshed out in space and the nexus "sucked" him in before he died? Or was that energy discharge a part or an tentacle , so to speak, of the nexus itself?
That brings up another quandry...if the E-B was close enough to the Energy Ribbon, then why don't all the crew that was on that ship didn't experience what Guinan and Soran did????

Agreed. And we got to see bumpy-headed Klingons in action for the first time (the start of TMP doesn't really count), some nice bar-scenes a la Star Wars cantina, some great character development, a nice look at Vulcan and a truly happy ending. I've never put this movie in the 'odd numbers are bad' category.

Yes, on the whole they weren't terrible, but I was disappointed with the climactic scene on Sha Ka Ree.

There was no climactic scene on Sha Ka Ree, that's the point. And the FX in V are just part of the problem with the film. There are BIG legitimate reasons to poorly rate V, not so much ST III.

Well Back to the OP after some serious thought. I for one enjoyed every Trek film from TOS to TNG. Most of the time I really don't understand various fans reactions to needing to dissect and rip them apart.
Sure there are some that I enjoy more than others, but I never really didn't have the need to the whole "nit-picking " thing.
So in all honesty, I didn't place a vote at all.

Yes. The Search for Spock is easily the most underrated of the bunch. I see it as the perfect companion piece to The Wrath of Khan.

Thanks for all the votes and comments, everyone.

Would love to hear some from those who voted for one the other films that haven't been discussed much. No counter-critiques --- this is a sunshine thread ;)

Trek III gets my vote. We have the Klingons featured in their first movie, a great over the top performance by Christopher Lloyd, Spock's "spirit" is entrapped within Dr. McCoy, Kirk et al. steal the Enterprise, sabotage the Excelsior, Kirk's son is killed, the Enterprise is blown up, Kirk kills the Klingon Captain and Spock is reunited with his spirit in a ceremony that gives us a further glimpse into Vulcan culture.

This movie has everything a Trek fan could ask for!!

I also like Final Frontier, the humor is very dated but otherwise it has a great theme and very good character development.

I think Undiscovered Country. For me it shares the #1 spot with WOK. It rarely gets any attention at all.

Huh? TUC is usually rated very highly. I don't think of it as "underrated" at all.

I'm another vote for Star Trek III just because it's lumped with the "bad" odd numbered Treks, and it happens to be a favorite of mine. But I also want to say I agree that V deserves some respect for being the only Trek film to really focus on the Kirk/Spock/McCoy friendship. However there's just nothing else I like about it.

While it's generally accepted that the even numbered movies are the stronger entries, I still feel that The Undiscovered Country is often glossed over. I'm not sure why, it just feels like it doesn't get enough praise. I've never heard anyone say it wasn't good, but I've never really seen it get as much love as the other even numbered movies had - Nemesis doesn't count. :)

I recently created thread on how I don't think The Final Frontier is that terrible.

Insurrection was another one I always liked. First Contact was always my favorite TNG film, but Insurrection is right after it. I've stated this before, but I really think Insurrection is the most Roddenberry-like Star Trek movie.

It was a toss up to me with The Search For Spock and Insurrection. But I think the general opinion of The Search For Spock gets a much more general positive review than Insurrection, so I went with Insurrection.
