New Life 2.0

Hello everyone!

A couple of months ago, I posted a thread about me changing my life by accepting a permanent position as a computer scientist with the Police Force.

I've spent one month in a basic training, consisting mainly of classes about the organization of the Police Force and I even got to hold and fire a gun for the first time in my life (I have no idea though how this is useful for a computer scientist...).

Anyway, after that training I came to my new office. I've been here for one week. Things seem OK. I haven't done any real work yet though. I have been told some things about the systems and programs they have here and I've started reading about some java-related stuff they use here and I haven't used in the past.

I also found a nice place to rent in my new city. I don't have any furniture yet so I stay with some relatives (which is not very convenient because I need almost one hour to go to work).

Things are generally a mess, I don't have a place of my own to stay, I have lots and lots of paperwork to do for work (for things like health insurance etc.), my boyfriend is at my old city and my PhD advisor (also in my old city) is angry with me because I don't have a permanent Internet connection yet after 5 days of renting a place  and I can't work 12 hours per day like I used to.

Despite all this, I feel good! :) Up to now, I had in mind that I'd go abroad for an academic carrier. Most would say that plan seems much more attractive than staying here and working at the public sector. However, for some reason, life seems so much nicer right now. I hope I made the right decision!

Thanks for reading all the way down here!

It sounds as if things are on the up for you. Good to hear. :bolian: You'll get settled in your own place soon enough and really make it your home. Good luck!

I can think of a few encounters with computers where I wished I had a gun...

Glad you're enjoying the early days of your new role.

Well done for making such great progress in your career. I'm sure your family are very proud of you. :)

Are you still living stin Ellada?

Ti yinete ekei? Stin Afstralia all we're hearing is that the Germans are trying to take over. Again

^ Yep, still in Greece. I had some opportunities to leave but I don't really want to. Things are not very good, indeed. It would take lots and lots of threads to even try to describe the current situation. The EU (i.e. the Germans mainly) are indeed trying to take over in many aspects. I understand that this is the case in other European countries as well, but it seems that we are the only ones that have the political situation that allows others to form that bad public image about us.

Anyway, this is not the place to start a such a big discussion, but since you asked, this is some insight. :)
