Space Battleship Yamato 2199

The sad truth is that as much as I love Yamato and other works by Leiji Matsumoto getting people interested in a 40 year old anime is very difficult.

True enough. The dated animation, theres apparently only one woman on board, and the slighty dodgy science don't help either.

I'm usually not a big remake fan either. but it looks like their taking great pains to be respectful of the original work.

I get the feeling you're not going to be happy about the anime based on Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin I hear is in the making.
You're smeging kidding me.

I realize it's hard to get people interested in old shows and movies etc but in my opinion I think the greatness of the original is lost on people when they can pick flashy and new over it. It's taking away the curiosity of looking back.

Edit: FFS http://starblazers.com/images/apr12/images/68912.JPG they made him look like a girl...

You can still be curious and look back, just because they remade it into a film trilogy in the 80's and then again today doesn't mean you can't go back and enjoy the original, heck even with MSG you see hardcore fans stating that the movie trilogy is a great substitute for the original series which had flaws hence the changes and I agree (this is coming form someone who considers MSG to be my favorite anime of all time).

Is this in the same continuity as the movie?

No, it's a "reboot", or "remake", or... I don't know what's the right word today :rommie:
An update?

I just think it takes the due attention away from how good the original was if it's only the updated version that gets all the attention. I realize people can still check out the original if they choose but the flash and buzz surrounding the new version would make them less inclined especially if it's basically the same story with weaker animation....

I have to agree with this one. There is a certain...Yaoi... pretty-boy softness to this new Desslar that does not invoke the pure masculinity and bad-ass that we've come to love from the original.

That's it. Very Yaoi. He just doesn't come off as a Threat. That's my main problem with the newer animes these days is that the characters male and female are very feminine. It was my worry with this new series that this would happen but it doesn't seem too bad with the other characters. Still I prefer the squiggly blue light in the live action film to this and that was a joke in itself.

Plus there is going to be some new material added to it in the form of flashback stuff.

Wait. Slighty effeminate villains in anime? Wow, I've never seen THAT before! ;) :D

For now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe its just an early rejected design. I'll wait and see how he looks in the final product.

AND it's been an anime staple since the time of the original (38 year old) Space Battleship Yamato:

IE - the original 'Galactor' villain from the original "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman".

According to Tim Eldred the new (Desslok) Dessler's head and face are based on a real person. A Russian fan of Yamato named Anton Kholodov.

So the Japanese have now based one of their more famous villians on an actual foreigner.

I am really excited by this remake as everything seems to be in the correct places and the care being done with it puts most remakes and reimaginings to shame.

I will note that there has been one gender swap. The pilot Akira Yamamoto (known as "Hardy" in the Star Blazers dub) has been made into a woman. Oddly this should be fine since he was only in one episode in the 1974 run (the pilot that's plane was damaged and needed help getting back to the ship) and only got some characterization in the second series in 1978.

That makes a certain amount of sense, given that in the live action film he went out like a bitch.

Yeah but it will make Akira's punching match with the Marines much more interesting should they get to the second series.

It isn't just Yuki.

There's at least five.

I think this opening for a Yamato-game still looks the best:
