The future of the Republican Party.

Because certain states would ban it and have already made it as difficult as possible to get one. A woman shouldn't have to travel hundreds of miles for a basic medical procedure. .

Why not?

Even if people have a "right" to something there is no compelling state interest or obligation in making utilizing that "right" easy or convenient.

If you really want easy access to abortion for all, why not have rolling abortion clinics like the old fashioned bookmobiles roaming the countryside...

Don't worry. Poll after poll shows that the Republicans are on the wrong side of this issue. The pro-lifers might be louder than the pro-choicers, but they're fewer in number because the Republicans have spun this into a biblical debate.

I have no idea why Republicans think an election year push on women's health/rights is a winning tactic. For all the talk about keeping the government out of healthcare, they sure do seem keen on getting the government all up in vaginas from coast to coast because of a passing verse in the Bible.

Because it does not matter what the American people think or what they tell pollsters.

What matters is who votes and where.

And if the polls (and thus the public) are on your side, then why support Roe V. Wade? If the American public is on the side of abortion rights, then why not let it be decided at the local and state levels as it used to be? If the American public is truly in favor of abortion rights, then it won't matter what the Supreme Court says.
Because medical matters shouldn't be a state-by-state thing. In fact, medical matters should only be between a patient and their doctor, be it woman or man.

Calling an abortion simply a "medical matter" rejects centuries of beliefs and debate about what constitutes life and the justifications for ending it.

Abortion is by any reasonable measure also a matter or morals and ethics.

Abortion is no more just a "medical matter" any more than the death penalty is no more than a "law enforcement issue".

I accept the medical information over "belief". One is based on fact, the other is wishful thinking.

I accept beliefs that have stood the tests of 2,000 years and horrendous persecutions over the current "morals of the day".

One day, I'm sure that the "right" to abortion will no longer be necessary as advancing technology makes them an irrelevancy (see Star Trek: Voyager- Deadlock).

When that time comes, technology will have overtaken and superceded any debate about "rights". People whether it be 100 or 200 years from now will look back on those in our time and be shocked at the idea that anyone would condone abortion. Just as we looked back schocked that anyone could condone enslaving another human being.

Actually, it does matter what the American people think.

What matters is who votes and where.
So...it does matter what people think? They have voted...about almost a dozen times since Roe vs. Wade for a President who doesn't make this a core issue BECAUSE ITS FUCKING STUPID. Of course, Republicans pay their voters lip service about abortion, and their voters reelect them...even though they've never done anything about it. So...keep playing that game well-informed-Republican. How's all that working out for you?

And if the polls (and thus the public) are on your side, then why support Roe V. Wade? I support Roe vs. Wade because Jeremiah 1:5 is not the law and the United States of America is a nation of laws, not religious beliefs. If you want to go to a nation built on relgious beliefs then there are a few in Southwest Asia that you might be interested in.

And we can't just stop following Roe vs. Wade. The Supreme Court ruled on it almost 40 years ago. Congress can't do anything to overturn it as it would be ruled unconstitutional. The President can't do anything to overturn it as he wouldn't have the power, and if he did it would be unconstitutional. The states are already doing everything they can do within their power to do what they can to overturn it within their own jurisdictions but they can only do so much because anything greater would be unconstitutional.

Look up the seperation of powers. Your party is the one who's been jerking off over the sanctity of the Constitution ever since Obama was sworn in. You'd think you'd know something about the thing.

When that time comes, technology will have overtaken and superceded any debate about "rights". People whether it be 100 or 200 years from now will look back on those in our time and be shocked at the idea that anyone would condone abortion. Oh, they'll be shocked...but mainly because people like you were given a voice. Every single thing you believe in will be dead and buried in 50-100 years.

Man up and accept it. Or read a book. Either way you'll be better for it.

Don't get so uppity and hostile. I"ve been quite courteous here.

And the Supreme Court can change. A couple of the more liberal justices die and replaced by conservatives and Roe V. Wade will be gone the next time it is challenged.

the Constitution has been changed more than two dozen times. It can be changed again.

Finally, I'm not one who "jerks off" to the Constitution or whatever you are talking about. The founding fathers were not gods and the constitution isn't written on stone tablets.

the Constitution has been changed more than two dozen times. It can be changed again.
It won't ever be changed to prohibit abortions. Ever.

Perhaps you're right. And perhaps a "constitutional remedy" is a very flawed way of ending elective abortions. Perhaps anti abortion people like myself should embrace a more bottom up, grass roots approach to change hearts and minds. To reintroduce social stigma to abortions. To advocate free prenatal care and delivery for woman who are pregnant but do not wish to keep their child. Graduated restrictions on access to abortion on a local basis.

Thanks Squiggly. You've given me much to consider.:)

What the hell do you think has been going on for 40 years? It's been happening and public opinion has moved that much.

And "reintroduce social stigma to abortions"? That's going to be about as effective as Westboro Baptist. Do you honestly think walking up to coeds on the quad and saying "you're going to hell" is going to sway anyone? That shows that not only do you not understand your opposition but you're also ignorant of basic human responses.

Fuck.

Do you honestly think walking up to coeds on the quad and saying "you're going to hell" is going to sway anyone?

No need to bring religion into it.

Who do you think actually gets abortions Squiggy?
Not us men, therefore we men don't get a say in the matter.

In that case, no man should be compelled to provide child support for a baby if he doesn't want to.

No say in the matter, then no cash every month.

I love that you used a Star Trek: Voyager episode as a reference. Yes, that is a rational adult response.

Your "beliefs" have been used as justification for every single abuse in the past 2,000 years. The Crusades, slavery, not allowing equal rights, wars, and all the dirty spots on our history. If those are moral, then your "beliefs" are the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. Also this country is not based on your "beliefs", instead they are based on laws that are carefully created and voted on. Not the ramblings and fairy tales of bronze age idiots who hated women. I put my trust in reality, not ancient ghost stories.

Women. For a multitude of reasons.

Not us men, therefore we men don't get a say in the matter.

Good luck arguing that in court.

Really?

Do we have to go into all the references the founding fathers made to God?

Apparently, most of the founding fathers (and no, the majority of them were not deists) believed in those "ancient ghost stories".

[Forcing a woman to love the child that was begotten in a rape and be reminded of what has been done to her for the rest of her life .

Who said anything about "forcing a woman to love the child" or "rest of her life".

She gives birth and she never has to see it again.

And as stated above in response to your inquiry I believe, I did state that I would allow the "rape/incest exception" for obvious political reasons.
Right, because of political-strategical reasons, not because you actually care about the raped woman.
Would you adopt a child begotten in rape? Would you love raise him, love him, tell him one day that his daddy is a rapist and his mummy gave him away because of that and be able to pay the psychologist bills after you revealed that to him? Seriously?

That doesn't make them real. I don't care if they believed in Big Bird, it has no bearing on the discussion. They didn't base the country on any religious beliefs, a point made clear in their writings, letters, and treaties. Ignore history and facts all you want, it doesn't make you right.
