How did Parallels Riker killed Picard?

Emperor Norton

Captain
Captain
There is a scenario from Parallels, and in a few Myriad Universe settings, were Riker became Captain upon killing Picard at the cliffhanger of "Best of Both Worlds". Now, I love the idea of Captain Riker, but something that's bugged me is how could Riker, even in these parallel realities, have ended up killing Picard as Locutus?

Because its not like the situation was that in the normal reality, he didn't order them to fire, and in the alternate reality he did, thus leading to the death of Picard. He ordered them to fire, but the thing was, the Borg had already read Picard's thoughts, so whatever technothingy they had planned to destroy the cube (can't recall) they modulated or whatever to adapt to. So how would that not occur even in the parallel reality? What really changed to permit the destruction of the cube and Locutus?

:shakes head:

Anyway... It was an alternate universe so pretty much anything could have happened. Maybe the rig with the deflector dish did end-up working? Maybe Riker decided not to pursue the Borg to Earth and instead got involved into a side battle? Maybe the ship wasn't repaired in time to meet the cube at Earth, the Borg assimilated Earth, and the Enterprise was on the fringes of the rebellion battle as the Borg spread through the Federation?

There's lots of things that could have happened but we don't have much to go on to guess at what did happen because we've only that couple sentence statement from that Riker to go on.

... But that's all on the universe we see with the verge of being destroyed Enterprise.

I now realize you may be talking about the reality Worf actually participates in with the missing Picard, lost by the Borg. Again, either the stunt with the deflector dish ended up working, another way was found to stop the Borg, or everything happened pretty much the same way only attempts to remove Picard from the Collective weren't successful.

Some possibilities

1) In the universe where Picard was killed, Picard managed to block the Borg from assimilating his knowledge about the deflector weapon so they did not shield against it.

2) In the universe where Picard was killed, Geordi managed to get the deflector working earlier, and the Enterprise attacked earlier before the Borg could use Picards knowledge of the deflector weapon.

3) In the universe where Picard was killed, Riker came up with an alternative to the deflector pulse weapon that Picard didn't know about and destroyed the Borg that way.

Or, the shock of being separated from the Collective at the end of BOBW when the Cube blew up killed him.

Or maybe Admiral Hansen got killed earlier in the Battle of Wolf-359 and a younger more dynamic officer took over and found a way to destroy the Borg ship there. And Riker is just feeling guilty for the failed rescue attempt earlier.

Easy answer: In that alternate universe we're discussing, everything happened as we saw it in Part 2 up to the end - Data and Worf kidnap Locutus and bring him back to the Enterprise. Except, instead of hitting upon the idea of putting the Borg "to sleep," our people fail, so Riker has Picard killed as a last ditch effort to stop the Borg. It doesn't work. BAM! Alternate universe.

Hmmm, been awhile since I've seen this episode, but isn't the Enterprise that Worf is on a technologically superior version of the "correct" Enterprise (at least by appearance)? If so, I'll postulate that whatever happened occurred after, not before, Wolf 359, but whatever happened gave Starfleet enough experience with the Borg to accelerate its tactical developments and refit the Enterprise and, presumably, other ships.

The display behind Worf actually looks suspiciously like what we see in Trek XI. I wonder if Abrams remembered that when he designed the nuEnterprise?

As far as this thread, I always assumed the shock of separation from the Collective killed Picard.

What display?

Basically I see two options

1.) After aiding Riker & crew in preventing the Borg attack from succeeding, Picard was somehow unable to be saved from assimilation, & died after his link with the destroyed Borg cube was broken

2.) The rescue of Picard from the Borg cube never succeeded at all, & Riker & crew found an alternate manner in which to prevent the assimilation of Earth

To me, the advanced technological developments on board the ship would seem to suggest option two being more likely, as it would appear defense & tactical have been altered more than most other areas, perhaps as a result of their experiences with the Borg. I really doubt they'd need that much of a different type of Enterprise to handle Bajorans, no matter how aggressive they've become

That was how I pictured it. The Borg were defeated it, but Picard couldn't be saved from the assimilation.

Actually, without ever really thinking about it, I just figured that Picard had never been brought back, & the crew managed to get out of the mess some other way

But now either seems workable to me

There's also the possiblity that Worf - or Riker - turned around and killed Picard before he was abducted. Sort of inverted from when Picard did the crewman that is about to get borged in FC a 'favor'.

That would be an amusing twist on the one of the Enterprise's in Parallels was from the JJverse especially since some of them assume it was the one from the Borg assimilated everything universe.

The representation of the Borg varies depending upon the series. Within the TNG series (not movies), the Borg don't assimilate via tubules. Assimilation requires extensive surgery over a period of time. Also, when a component is pulled from a Borg without any preparation, the Borg self destructs.

So, when Locutus is abducted and revived back on board the Enterprise, he doesn't try to assimilate anyone (if he did, then they'd have to kill him). He continues on as "spokesperson" for the Borg. When Data puts the Borg cube in an infinite regeneration loop, the Borg cube self-destructs. A nasty feedback pulse is sent across the collective carrier wave. This causes several Borg components in Locutus to suddenly go dead. It's as if they were pulled directly from him. The result? Self-destruction. Locutus ends up vaporizing right before their eyes, just as the dead Borg did when components were pulled from them.

That makes the most sense to me as to how BOBW ended, leaving Riker as Captain.

Remember, we're talking about infinite parallel universes. Every possible outcome that can occur does occur according to Data. There may be a billion universes in which Picard survived and another billion in which he didn't all for different reasons. Perhaps in one it is something as simple as him having a heart attack at an inopportune moment. Perhaps in another the Borg found Worf a more suitable representative and simply snapped Picard's neck. Perhaps in another Riker was a power hungry bastard who took the opportunity of the crisis to kill Picard and seize command. There's any number of possibilities...

One of the Myriad Universes stories has a scenario where Picard is killed. In that universe, Data was delayed in building Lal, and she'd been recently activated when Picard was grabbed by the Borg. The Borg probe Picard's mind for recent technical developments, and the info on Lal comes up first, instead of the deflector modifications. So when Riker fires at the Borg cube containing Picard, the Borg aren't prepared for it, and the cube is destroyed and Picard killed.

That's The Embrace of Cold Architects by David R. George III, from the Shattered Light collection. I started reading that and it was quite good.
