Spartacus: Vengenace season 2

I wonder if Ilithia will be wandering the ludus like a madwoman when the next season opens. She seems to be in exactly the same position as Lucretia was at the end of S1 - baby dead, belly sliced open, covered with blood.

Nice to see Asher FINALLY get his comuppance.

And holy crap, a Rob Tapert show actually followed known historical facts ! Spartacus did indeed defeat Glabor by raiding his camp at night when the troops were asleep.

To be fair they have always been faithfull to history. Ilithia has been confirmed as being dead and im glad they have all been killed off as there is no point in having them around next season as the story moves on from Capua. Im looking forward to seeing how they tackle the next part of the war.

And Crixus has been boring dead weight all season.

He really has and he was great in the other parts. I suppose storywise it makes sense with what happened with Naevia and all but he isn't as fun to watch. At least, Gannicus has stepped up to the plate.

Sparacus's chick getting killed off is a waste of a perfectly good piece of ass.

You must be inundated and overwhelmed with compliments of how charming you are.
Really, did Mira serve much else purpose? Spartacus gave half a shit about her at best, her death wasn't very emotionally charged, I guess it gave Spartacus an excuse to yell for about 10 seconds. She was great eye candy though, so why kill her off?
Speaking of Lucretia and Asher, why did she give half a shit about being promised to him if she knew she was going to steal a baby and fly to the afterlife?

I thought it was fairly evident that Lucretia hadn't intended to kill/take the baby until she turned around and saw Ilythia coming at her to push her off the balcony. That was when Lucretia snapped.

I guess I had read this interview right after which implied to me that she had always planned to take the child and 'deliver' him to her husband.

I thought the finale was okay. It wasn't as good, as satisfying as the finale of Blood and Sand, but it was serviceable. I was shocked by some of the deaths, most notably Lucretia, Mira, and Peter Mensah's character. I thought it was going to be Gannicus, but I guess Gannicus will be back next season. I did wish that Mensah's character had gone out taking that barbarian out though.

I didn't quite get Lucretia's motive. She's generally more sly. I could see her stealing the kid, killing Ilythia, but wasn't expecting the murder-suicide. I had mixed feelings about Ashur's demise. I knew he was out the door when they showed him rape Lucretia, more than that once too, but he was such a good villain, it's sad to see him go. I am glad Naevia got her revenge, but it would've been nice to see Mensah get a stab or two in there, owing to their confrontation in the season one finale and his promise to send Ashur to the afterlife.

Overall I thought it was a decent season, the second half much better than the first half. The first half felt a bit aimless and it took a while for both the new Spartacus to grow into his role and the guy Glaber to fully take on being a worthy adversary. By the end I thought both had largely succeeded, though I looking forward to seeing a whole new round of bad guys.

Funny how ancient Rome looks like Mordor...

Nice finale with more deaths than Game of Thrones, lol. I couldn't take my mind off Andy Whitfield's death all season long but by that final episode the replacement has eventually grown on me. What's his name again?

Historically, Varinius hounds Spartacus for a little while after Glabor's defeat, but the show did away with Varinius early. Time that ol' bastard Crassus to show up!

Crixus and Spartacus disagree on tactics (historically) early in the war and split the army between them, going their separate ways. I'd be surprised if the show follows that - even the movie did away with that for dramatic reasons.

The Osprey history I read also suggests that Spartacus' wife was not killed, but was captured with him, and lived with him at the ludus, and even escaped with him. I suppose it's more dramatically satisfying to have her killed and give him a more romantic motive for his hatred and rebellion.

Thanks! :techman:

Well the scenes take place on and around Vesuv. There's bound to be ashes everywhere.
I didn't mean the camp at Vesuvius but Capua and Batiatus' Ludus, instants before Lucretia took the dive. It was very Mordoresque. And I know it's intended that way.

So Oenemaus' fate caught up with history. Too bad, I greatly enjoyed Mensah's presence. He'll be missed.

Well, the Starz "godz" took pity on me and for at least this weekend reinstituted my free starz package. Saw the first 5 eps, caught up with the next 4 by recaps/reviews over the net and SAW the ep this weekend. Twice, in fact.

Whoa!

When Lucretia came into the bedroon with that knife, and blood all over her gown, I immediately flashed back to the premiere when we FIRST saw her crazed face and said to myself...

Oh no... she never came back from madness... she's STILL that crazy witch Illythia wanted Glaber to kill all those months ago!

"I sent the guard after the medicus"... AND then killed all the slaves in the house... so "nothing could come between us." (Need a SHUDDER icon  )

Holy crimeny Batman!

I couldn't even hold her actions against Lucretia (the murder of the innocent slaves) because she had so obviously gone "around the bend". AND when Illythia feared Lucretia wanted to "kill" her unborn child, and Lucretia reassured her as she talked of "unwrapping the gift to the House of Batiatus"... all I could think was; Illythia, are you regretting locking those doors 8 months ago... or just regretting not killing Lucretia all those times you had a chance this past season?

Funny... I still wasn't sure what was going to happen until she walked to the edge of the cliff with the child. I DIDN'T think she was going to toss him over. But as she turned to watch Illythia crawl towards her... my heart went into my throat because I knew immediately what she was going to do.

The widow of Batiatus, without husband, without rank... like that other widow we knew 5 years ago who liked red wigs... no matter what Lucretia schemed, she KNEW she was powerless in all things except one.

SHE, not Glaber, not Illythia, not Asher... SHE would control when and how she would die.

When she simply leaned back, with the babe in her arms, to slip away from the confines of her earthly imprisonment... it was harrowing and yet poetic. She had the one thing she could never give Batiatus in his lifetime, and now it was time to join him in death.

Speaking of poetic... watching the long train from her gown just slip over the cliff was amazing.

Speaking of vengeance... I'd say Lucretia got her's in spades..., setting up Asher's death, taking Glaber's heir, mortally wounding his wife, and even killing off his female slaves before she left the stage. It must have been very satisfying for her... until she hit "terminal velocity".

Remember in season 1, Lucretia thought Spartacus was bad luck for Quintus... and indeed he did bring about the fall of Batiatus... but who was really responsible for bringing Spartacus into their lives?

Glaber was doomed, simply DOOMED with both Spartacus AND Lucretia working against him!

"Now we build an army!"

Oh yeah. :bolian:

My friend and I were just left rather cold by the season finale. Considering the emotion that I felt in the first season's finale, that's really saying something.

For me it's about the characters. And they killed off the main ones... and not only that, but any new additions with promises were killed off too.

But that would have surely made me mourn their loss... but I just didn't feel it. Something has switched off in my mind. As to Lucricia... bringing her back just to do that was pretty pointless. I don't feel that either.

So I find it hard to find much point in watching next year. Season one will always largely be 'it' in my mind.

Pretty much expected that to happen. Once you get to Marcus Crassus, there is only so much story left to tell.

Spreading that out over two or even three seasons would result in horribly slow pacing.

At least it sounds like they've got the time and support to make a proper ending instead of finding out too late and leaving us all in the lurch.

Since the first 2 seasons have been leading UP to the slave war, I'd be pissed if we didn't get a season OF the slave war, which is the whole point of the Spartacus story.

As much as I have enjoyed Spartacus, I am surprised and pleasantly so-from a creative standpoint-to hear they are wrapping it up after Season 3. This way the show won't stagnate and live on past its expiration date like so many other shows. It also takes the sting out of some of the character deaths from the Season 2 finale, knowing that there is one more season to go. I have to wonder how far ahead this decision was made and maybe that's why some things went down like they did in Season 2, which essentially cleared out a good deal of the cast.

Found this in the TV Media forum and brought it here in case anyone wants to donate and they missed that post.

They're making a documentary about Andy Whitfield's journey with his lymphoma...

and they're recruiting backers to help fund the project. You can donate as little as 1 dollar here...

I had never heard of this website, Kickstarter, until Suzie Plakson mentioned it during her talk at the last Star Trek con I attended. She was using it to find backers to help fund an ebook/audiobook she had written.
