I'm just curious what's the history between Cryptic devs and science officers?

I really love my science officer and she contributes a lot in ground combat, but it seems like science officers barely have any role to play in space missions. In fact several players have out right blamed my science character on several STFs for not having enough dps to complete optionals in time. The only redeeming skill is gravity well, which is a god-send in cure space, but its a skill all characters can use.

It's a long winded problem that comes back to PvE difficulty... In that there isn't any, not really.

Cryptics idea of difficulty is to hike up the shield HP, hull HP and damage of NPCs to insane levels, rather then have them use damage/tanking skills. Heck most NPCs rarely have more then two skills, if that. As such, each space mission is basically all about DPS. Tanking is hilariously easy for all classes, so unless you're doing an STF you're not in much danger of dying.

As said above, NPCs don't really use tanking skills (instead having allround high stats), so a sci captains debuff skills aren't much needed or much useful. The most useful thing a sci-ship can do is use crowd control abilities, like gravity well.

It's only when you get into PvP that a sci-captain in a sci ship truly stands out. Escorts main defense is speed, which a sci ship can counter with tractor beam. Extend shields can be disabled with photonic shockwave. Buffs that are keeping a ship from being destroyed can be removed with subnucleonic beam. Team can get alot of extra tanking help from scattering field.

STFs are like a halfway point between generic PvE and PvP, in that sci-ships do have more use in regards to crowd control, but DPS still reigns supreme.

Okay I'll admit, I'm rather proud of this win :)

Man though, do I hate AFKers. When I see them I wish every player on the map would just leave so we can create a private challenge without them. Sure we might be a few men down, but atleast the AFKers don't get any rewards.

Oh wow... that is... so sad!

I don't know what is more sad. having to deal with AFKers on your team or STILL winning against the other team with such a margin. :guffaw:

I hate the ones that accept the Borg Incursion, then sit back the whole time waiting for me to take out the Borg.

Looks like the promotion this weekend is an EU Relaunch.

It's a great shame they've removed the D'deridex-class "Defenders" from the standard Romulan roster. I don't want to do any stupid event just to get to fight an NPC with half decent AI.

Yeah, the Defender startled me the first time - even with my Photonic Fleet I was barely getting it down to 70% hull! Took a while but I beat the thing... then I got wise and upped my DPS to the max, concentrating on one shield only...

Really? Every time I took one down it maybe took 2 minutes at the most. Most the time it was about 15-30 seconds and *boom*. I fly a cruiser. We're talking the Defenders with the regen bug, right?

The regen isn't a bug per se: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=4122386#post4122386 The ship actively uses healing and other abilities to counter whatever you attempt to use against it. They're designed for five man teams in some upcoming event. It was quite nice to see it use science team to clear my energy siphon for example. The ship even tries to keep its weak shield facings away from you.

New question. I'm on the chapter called "Past Imperfect." I am at a part where I'm in the past, and I'm squaring off against a bunch of D7 battlecruisers. I keep getting killed. There is just me, and 4 or 5 Klingon ships. Anyone know how to beat this level? It's really pissing me off.
Thanks in advance.

Nearly a month ago I posed this question. Some were surprised that I couldn't get past it. In this case, it wasn't me. I just found out that there must have been a bug in the system. The damn thing was giving me like 10 or so Klingon ships relentlessly. I should have known something was wrong when Kirk's Enterprise blew up in the battle.
I just got past it. It really wasn't a big deal in and of itself, but it feels good that I finally got past the damn thing!! This chapter of my life can come to a close.:bolian:

i've pretty much given up on Cryptic / Perfect World offering updates or support for bit that players actually want to see in the game now...

take a look over at the STO Forums just on the 'development requests' threads, there are literally hundreds of threads asking for simple costume updates and alien bits that wouldn't take more than half an hour to code, and the response from the team there is "Sorry, we're working on new hair physics, drop box updates and developing more ships." Which has been the standard response for over 2 years according to their posts in the forum...

It's good to post in the STO Forums, but sometimes it's more productive to grab a dev's ear when you catch them online. I'm sure that there are days when they read through all the postings and go "yeah, yeah, whatever..."

And just what the hell is that woman doing???

Good, now you work on something more challenging like punching tribbles. ;)

In other words, it's awesome for those of us who blast through enemy AI like they're all morons. And now it's gone. Well, shoot.

Anyway, I give up on trying to use any ship other than my Excelsior. The results in a PvP match (On average, it's 3 equal ranked KDF vs me) The Defiant, moderate damage, and I'm blown up in under 30 seconds. The Sovereign, mediocre damage, and I'm blown up in under a minute. The Odyssey, mediocre damage, and I'm blown up in about 2 minutes. The Excelsior? I do much more damage, and when I do finally get taken down, it takes about 10-15 minutes.

The other day, 7 KDF (6 level 50 and 1 level 41) destroyed my Defiant in about 11 seconds. I got off a couple of shots, but no real damage to them. I came back 5 minutes later in my Excelsior and they were still there, so I re-engaged them. They did destroy my ship, but I took out 3 of them before they did, and it took them 5 minutes to take me down.

The equipment (shields, deflectors, impulse, and consoles) are all the same. Either I'm just so used to the Excelsior I can't really adjust to the other ships, or the Excelsior's just still the flat out best cruiser for a Tactical Officer playing PvP.

I actually view this as a good thing. I like my combat to be more strategic where the proper application of skills at the right time wins the day rather than a brute strength duke out. Maybe finally, players will start shifting focus away from pure dps builds and actually start looking at abilities that heals, buff or debuff.

Oh, I agree. I just get annoyed because there are other ships I want to play, and they just don't hold up like the Excelsior retrofit. Hell, my Tac Odyssey goes down faster than the Excelsior retrofit, and it's brand new!

Hey!!

Tecnically I don't think there are bad ships. Depending on your playstyle you just have to find the right ship for you and if you fly another you have to adapt to it to make it work.

Obviously the Excelsior is the sweetspot for a lot of people cruiserwise.
It does decent damage because of it's high tactical ability mostly.
I am not sure why you survive longer in the Excelsior then in the Sovereign, must have something to do with your defense value.
For me the sweet spot is the Sovereign.
It is so smack in the middle of playstyles, to me it feels like it can do everything.
My setup is "as tanky as needed, as deadly as still possible".
However I would still call her a supportship.
I can wear other players down and even win against multiple ships, as ker'rat is proving again and again lately.
But my Achilles heal are sci CC builds.
I can't do squat against them. If they disable me I am space dust.
And when escorts do the smart thing (and run) before I destroy them I have nothing to prevent them from it.
Well except the graviton console I got from a gold box.
But what I really need to squeeze into there would be a tractor beam but that would only be possible with an Odyssey...

my sweet spot is the oddysey science class... it's a science ship, meaning i can really make amazing use of my BOFF abilities, but still have enough tactical stations to get in there and sink my teeth into a battle...

But i completely agree, everyone is going to have their own 'sweet spot' for ships, what works for one style of play isn't going to work for another person... just experiment with the ships and find the one that really works best for you :)
