The Dominion War books

Hey guys,

I'm sure its old news for you but I just finished reading these. I've only recently discovered DS9 so I'm reading these just as I watch the episodes. I read 1+3 but skipped 2+4 as they're sadly just novelizations of stories I just recently watched.

Anyway, the books. Typical Vornholt I guess but as always very enjoyable. Not sure there's much emotional depth there, especially given the punch the DS9 stories have, but still good. I vaguely remember Sam from the TNG storie The Lower Decks but found him good, strong enough to base a story around anyway

What did everyone else think? What about the Battle of Betazed? Are there any other stories that fill in the niches for this era?

Battle for Betazed is a fun read. Not the strongest, but I enjoyed it at the time I read it. It does setup a character who comes into prominence in the DS9 Relaunch and Lost Era Books.

I'd also be remiss to not mention Tales of the Dominion War which is a fairly strong collection of stories, in my opinion. They stretch from "Between" Season 5 and 6, all the way through the Series Finale. Many of the stories fill you in on TOS/TNG/New Frontier characters as well Shinzon. One story is a prequel to "Battle for Betazed" as well.

It's worth mentioning that Books 2 & 4 aren't "just" novelizations of the episodes; Diane Carey adds new threads and subplots of her own that unify the various episodes more closely and offer an alternative interpretation for some of the events in the episodes.

And it was nice to get a Jem'Hadar perspective for a change! I read all four and found I didn't remember the episodes quite as well as I thought I did. So they were enjoyable for me.

I'll probably read a Lost Era book (got all those too) so I can have time to finish DS9 before I get into it. I've worked hard on avoiding spoilers so I'd hate to ruin it now.

I'll definitely read Battle For Betazed then. I'm hooked!

Be sure to read the DS9 Relaunch once you finish the TV series. It's really amazing just how well the books continue the show's story. It pretty much feels like the show just kept on going.

They also trim out some material, but if you've seen the episodes, then presumably that's not so important.

The Dominionwar books are well written I like the added material you didn't get to see in the ds9 tv shows.enjoyed the books Tales of the Dominion war and the ds9 story anthology Prophecy and change have some stories that take place during the Dominion war.Excellent stories in both antholigies.

Totally agree. I really enjoyed all four books, and appreciated the way the TNG installments filled out that time period.

"Lower Decks" is a favourite of mine so getting a bonus Sam and Taurik adventure was very cool! Complete with a twist ending I never saw coming.

Anyone know where Tales of the Dominion War fits in time wise? I'm watching DS9 for the first time (well first time properly) and I'm just about at the end of season 6. It will take me a few months to get through all of S7, should I wait? Or is it safe to read without worrying about spoilers?

I know, spoilers is maybe not the right word for a show that finished more than 10 years ago

Well, as one might guess from the title, it spans the entire Dominion War. The first story takes place between seasons 5 and 6, the next three are during season 6, the next two after that are between seasons 6 and 7, and the final six are during season 7.

Hah! This is pretty much exactly where I'm at. Just finished watching through DS9 (it was the only show I never watched regularly when it was on - boy, was that a mistake), and have read Behind Enemy Lines and Tunnel Through the Stars, and loved 'em - now working on The Battle of Betazed, and will move on to Tales of the Dominion War after that.

Afterwards, planned reading order is The Left Hand of Destiny, Diplomatic Implausibility, The Lives of Dax, Avatar, then The Brave and the Bold. Don't have all the Mission Gamma books yet, so can't start them - may start IKS Gorkon after Brave and the Bold, as I've already bought all those.

The DS9 novelizations were pretty good, although it seemed a bit odd that O'Brien was the person chosen for the mission to destroy the Argolis sensor array. I also seem to remember the possibility of Changeling infiltration being suggested as being responsible for the Federation defeats.

Well, if anyone knows how to make Something Important stop working, it's the Operations Chief of DS9.

Why would it be odd? He was on the Enterprise-D back in TNG's Season 4 The Nth Degree when they had to repair the Argus Array, and he was still on the D in I, Borg (Season 5, episode 23) when the D went to the Argolis Cluster (who knows, besides the Borg incident, maybe the D was also asked to check out the array that was there). Most likely the arrays were very similar so O'Brien would most likely have the best engineering knowledge.
