The girl who played Rue was adorable and I think she was perfect for the role. Like I said earlier in this thread I was a little annoyed that we didn't see a little more of her especially the scene where she talks about District 11. I imagined both her and Thresh to be black when I read the book.

I also like Kravitz as Cinna though I must admit I didn't picture him as being black when i read the book but I had no problems accepting him being so in the movie. in fact I didn't think anything of it until I learnt some people were complaining about it.

I didn't really have any picture of Cinna (other than that I didn't think he was flamboyant, which some of the casting suggestions I'd seen for him suggest), though Kravitz wouldn't have come to mind, but when I heard he was cast I thought it sounded cool. And, indeed, he was very good in the part.

This is great:
'Survivor' alum Rob Cesternino on how to improve the Hunger Games -- the event, not the film

Rob C was one of my favorite contestants on The Amazon (the first season of Survivor I ever watched), and I love his sense of humor. There are a lot of commenters who are angry at him for writing that article, but, while I recognize that part of what Collins was trying to do seems to be to comment on the superficial nature of reality TV and our obsession with it, I also think there's room in the conversation for the kind of analysis of the whole topic that Rob C has brought into the equation.

Those Twitter folks are horrible. Plus it shows they clearly didn't read the book. Granted I read it two weeks before so descriptions were clearer in my mind but I thought Rue and Thresh were spot on. While Cinna was in up the air, as that article mentions, I thought Kravitz nailed the role with the time he was given. That scene especially before Katniss goes up the tube to the arena floor. Lawrence and Kravitz do a great job of showing support and trepidation. Great scene. I'm digressing from Rue, sorry.

I actually told the friend I saw it with that I wish the movie were sci-fi enough to some how bring Rue back. The actress had that much presence about her.

I agree on both counts. I think even if only Jennifer Lawrence had proven the best actress, that would have been a boon, but I think the studio was blessed to have a very good cast overall. That can make a huge difference, and I think Peter Jackson shared that blessing when he made the LOTR adaptations. He had a great cast to work with who fit the characters. The odds were in their favor on the casting. :D

In the book the people from District 11 knew that they were slaves, in fact they were worse off than District 12.

While I haven't read the books, I'm under the impression that some of the Districts (particularly those who send Careers) tend to have much stronger loyalty to The Capitol than others, because of the additional privileges they receive, and that this was one of the reasons the rebellion 75 years earlier failed. I could be wrong on that, but my impression is that it was a true civil war in that respect - there were loyalists and rebels in most, if not all of the Districts.

I don't want to give too much away but I can tell you that you learn more about the different districts in Catching Fire and Mockingjay and a far bit more about the rebellion 75 years before in Mockingjay.

More box office news, if anyone's interested: The Hunger Games made another $10.82 million on Monday. That's the highest-gross ever for a non-holiday Monday outside of blockbuster season (May-July) and December (when many people are on holidays).

I was planning to check this out yesterday, when my dad calls, telling me that he wants to see it too... and that I'd better not see it without him! So I guess I'll be holding off for another week. In lieu of my original plans, I decided to instead take in a screening of Battle Royale, which I figured would be close enough. ;)

Maybe i'm wrong but I have no interest in seeing this movie, looks too much like Twilight.

Fear not, the only thing about it that screams "Twilight" is the audience

That isn't really true. So far 56% of people going to see The Hunger Games have been over 25 years old. The movie has covered three of the four quadrants of people - young females, older females , young male and it seems to be making roadways into the older male quadrant. It is appealing to a far wider range of people than Twilight ever did and has taken twice as much money as any Twilight movie did on its first weekend.

You are wrong, please don't let the fact that younger kids like a movie dissuade you from seeing it. Look at the Demos that this movie is pulling in, everyone is seeing it.

essentially Hunger games is a sci fi/fantasy/dystopian story with the backdrop of a 'romance'.

While Twilight was a Romance with a backdrop of supernatural.

Speaking of box office figures, I wonder how Wrath of the Titans is going to do this Friday. Will it be the new Number 1 movie, will HG hold the spot?

Let's just say you're on the right track. :)

I'd say it could be a close race between THG and WoT this weekend.

Clash of the Titans opened on nearly the same date in '10 to $61m. If the same audience + some shows up +inflation then it's likley to hit $70m with help from 3-D prices also.

If The Hunger Games falls off 60%, a standard for front loaded films, then it'll do about $60m. If it has great legs, WOM gets the curious who didn't go last week and repeat business to only have a 50% weekend-to-weekend drop it'll do around $76m. I don't see Wrath doing that much business....but hey 2012 has been proving to be a great year for the box office since it hit the ground running the first weekend of January with The Devil Inside.

I thought this was pretty damn good. Lawrence is amazing.

I doubt Wrath will match Clash seeing the bad word of mouth the first one had. Considering the good word of mouth and reviews I expect Hunger Games to hold up somewhat well.
