I have a Skype interview... any advice?

I applied for a job 125+ miles away on an island. I have an interview on Skype set for Friday morning.

A few issues, my computer is 8 years old and my cam is 6 months old and I only got it for free Amazon shipping.

I also have no clue what to expect besides the fact I will be talking to the HR and the manager. Any advice besides "Buy new camera and computer by Friday"? :p

Make sure whatever will show in the backgound is appropriate (bookshelves are good, your bed is not) and neat. And make sure there's no noise in the background (no roommates or family, no music, no hungry kitties).

Best wishes!

Treat it just as seriously as you would a regular in-person job interview. Wear professional clothing and come prepared. Test your equipment beforehand so that if there are any little things to work out you get it figured out in time.

Good luck!

On the bright side, you won't have to worry about wearing pants

The computer is in the dinning room, so it's not too messy. Most of the papers are out of view and all they should be able to see is the plants I have. Which is fine, it's a farm / nursery job.

I think as long as I have nothing else running that Skype should work fine.

^ Plants in the background sound perfect. I hope you're going to do a test run with a friend, so you'll know, not just think, that Skype will run okay.

I'd echo what others have said about the background, and of course dress nice. IM me if you need someone to do a test call with.

Even mine? I actually wore shorts for a video phone interview along with the shirt and tie...

Make sure that you don't have a window behind you.

Completely shut down any instant messaging apps you have.

Put your cell phone on vibrate and out of arms length.

Make sure that you are not too far away or too close.

If you have a headset, use it as you will sound much better.

Best of luck!

I only interviewed via Skype once and that was 2 years ago when I was away and luckily, they agreed to do the interview. I echo those who say to practice through a friend or acquaintance. Pay special attention to their comments on how you sound and look. I would include the window that allows you to see the image they see, so you'll always know you're in frame.

From my personal experience, since there was a technical issue that delayed our start, make sure you have an alternate way of contacting them. A phone number would be preferable. If the technology fails you want to at least be able to call them and let them know what's going on, even if the problem is on their end. It might not be a bad idea to have another video service ready to go in case Skype gives you problems. Something like gChat or YahooChat. Even under the best of circumstances, it seems I always need a few minutes to make sure everything is working fine.

While I agree buying a new computer is not feasible, you might want to check with friends to see if anyone has a newer laptop that you can borrow for the interview. That would give you more options of where you wanted to be during the interview, if there is a better place than the dining room, and it would be a bit more reliable. Preferably a laptop with a built-in webcam so there is less issue of having the computer recognize it.

my advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

I already did that. i actually got my current job that way.

I did, it had some weird sound going on, but I think we fixed that.

I also have her number in case I need to give her a call.

I'm pretty good with questions, my problem is I have an accent, so I'm afraid the women won't be able to understand me as well as my friend.

how about just try Skype-ing with someone else first, to make sure the background is ok, the computer/camera works, and you're the right distance away?

Pretty basic...

I got the job!

It's a bit of a pay cut and only four months long and Ill have a roommate for the first time ever. But I don't care it's five minutes from the beech!
