Gap between Gen and FC?

Are there any novels that bridge the gap between Generations and First Contact? That deal with

1. ENT E construction
2. Geordie getting implants

Well, if you like Diane Carey's writing, it might be something for you. I find her writing weak, her Kirk-worship tedious, and her lack of diversity in crew annoying. I also don't get nautical jargon.

Ship of the Line is generally regarded around here as being very bad, and I would have to agree. I was looking forward to it when it first came out, but was very disappointed. Not what I was expecting at all.

I've not read "Slings and Arrows" but I read "Ship of The Line" when it first came out. Got through in under a day. Wasn't bad but it wasn't great either, very average (I guess is the word) and a light read. I usually like Diane Carey's books, but this one...it's forgettable for the most part.

Other than the interminable "Picard watches 'Balance of Terror' on the holodeck" chapters, I quite liked "Ship of the Line". I especially liked Captain Bateson's crew, and the USS Bozeman's backstory. Even if it doesn't quite mesh with what we saw in "Cause and Effect"

"The Return" is also set between GENS and FC, deals with the wreckage of the Enterprise-D being removed from Veridian III, and even features an unofficial interim Enterprise.

^ Interesting. I found Picard's holodeck education to be the best part of the book (which, FWIW, I loved cover to cover).

The Main story of Imzadi II: Triangle takes place just after Generations, "Friends with the Sparrows" from Sky's the Limit also takes place right around then. As stated above Ship of the Line and Slings and Arrows short story miniseries are in that era as well. I'll also mention Section 31: Rogue which is roughly 6 months prior to FC, as well as the comic book collections The Killing Shadows (from Wildstorm) and Spock: Reflections (from IDW).

Slings and Arrows was much better than Ship of the Line. I usually like Carey's work, but that one was the worst. It's the only one I can't immediately remember specifics about and one I've never reread.

:cool:thank you

Sorry about nitpicking, but hey I'm a Trekkie and it's what we do best. I'm pretty sure the S&A books are actually novellas, not short stories.

True, true. I was searching for the right ways to say "Miniseries of Stories" and it came out a little garbled!

I admit to being a little burned by Slings and Arrows because of Amazon/Schuster's pricing of the books, considering a few of them are close to 1/6 and 1/8 of the length of a novel.

As per Ship of the Line, I didn't love it, but I thought it vaguely enjoyable. There's some randomness in it that just seems like they were pulled from Diane Carey's "To Do List" that wouldn't work elsewhere. (The Squid thing for instance.) There are some genuinely good moments in the book, particularly when Bateson takes the E-E crew on the tour of the bridge. Though I was most annoyed by mopey Picard and the Holosuite of Self Pity. All around enjoyable, but not what I expected and it paints Bateson a little badly.

Mostly agree. Another chance to have more April stuff was greatly appreciated.

Mainly, I was surprised Licensing didn't insist on Carey using canonical crewmembers for Bateson's crew. Barely glimpsed in an episode but totally ignored by Carey. I was shocked when I discovered the old Psi Phi BBS and encountered such mass hatred for both "Red Sector" and "Ship of the Line".

It's easier to check canon details like that these days when we have Memory Alpha and DVD sets and the like. At the time the book came out, the script might've been the main reference source being used, along with publicity/reference photos from the production, which would've probably focused on the main guest stars and such. Since the background crew was just a bunch of extras onscreen for a few seconds, it might've been harder to check who they were.

Although the bridge crew isn't the only continuity problem in Ship of the Line. Carey portrays the Typhon Expanse as a well-patrolled region of the UFP/Klingon border in 2278, even though the script to "Cause and Effect" repeats Picard's log entry saying "We're the first Starfleet vessel to chart this unexplored region" four times. I can understand the bridge-crew oversight, but I'm amazed this one got past Licensing.
