Mass Effect 3 $$(ENDINGS SPOILERS)$$

On the other hand, if you take the apparantly tens of thousands of complaints about the game's ending, it's still a fairly small number compared to the total number of units sold (from what I can tell, something in the order of two and a half million in the States, plus three and a half worldwide as of a week ago.)
That, and you also need to consider selection bias. People who are happy won't go online to complain!

I don't know, I got more of a Ron Moore vibe from the ending. ;)

The story even made BBC News' front page, at one point I noticed it was one of their most read stories of the day. Sadly, they described the backlash as fans being opposed to the "bleak" ending rather than the various complaints about the lack of consequences, plot holes, logical and thematic inconsistencies, lack of closure, and general hokeyness.

BBC reporting it makes it more real! I saw that yesterday and found it a typically vague look at the problem, which is unfortunately the case with a lot of media outlets. It's only a game afterall. Hmm. :(

I've found now I'm back at work and also getting ready to move house that my attention from the negativity has shifted somewhat. Which is good really, the game was like 99% excellent. And I can't cope with clinging onto the negativity whilst having other stresses eating at me.

I guess I've been indoctrinated. :D

Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You’ll hear more on this in April. We’re working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we’ve received. This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue.

Seems like they'll be doing something about the ending.

I think they have to, they've already got DLC in development I'm sure and it's likely that the Hardcore Mass Effect fans wouldn't buy it or try to boycott if they didn't address the endings debacle.

It's also possible that Bioware want to tweak the ending a little. The behind the scenes stuff has made it clear that the ending was rushed because they couldn't get it finished in time for the release date EA had set. Now they have an opportunity to go to EA, point out that this debacle could impact future sales, and request a month or two so that they can release a proper ending as they had previously envisioned. It will probably still have the god child and space magic, but they may be able to fill in some of the plot holes and provide some closure on the characters.

They're giving you the privilege of buying something that may or may not enhance the ending. Only in 2012 is this considered a good thing. :p

I really find it annoying how they try to word-smith their way into making it seem like the ending was good but a bunch of malcontents are trying to bring it down. The ending sucked, plain and simple. The "artistic vision" thing only goes so far. A movie with a shitty ending still has a shitty ending regardless of what the director says.

While I do feel that games are art, above all else it is a form of entertainment. If they gave me this product for free then "meh, whatever". If you charge me 60 plus dollars for the damn thing then give me a half-assed conclusion, then I will complain about it.

Not to mention that I for one could give a crap what critics say. Plus as nice as artistic vision is I would kind of like if they had stuck to what they promised us for ME3 I.E. the no A,B, C ending thing and our choices actually having an effect as well as getting to tailor it like we've been doing with every game. Which lets face it is probably a big part why this ending is getting backlash you don't make a game where player gets to majorly shape how the story unfolds and then pigeon hold them into one basic (and yes it is ONE ending with minor changes) and stand there surprised that they get pissed off about it.

Still seems vague, good to see the CEO at least addressing the outcry

This makes me a bit more enthusiastic. A very respectful response from Bioware there. :)

This debacle with the ending is a very ugly mess. Even Jessica, the pr woman, is pulling back from her discussions with the fans. She explicitly told her followers to unfollow her twitter account and that she would no longer engage in conversation with the fans. From this point forward, she will be moderating between the fans and the company.

ME3 is an enjoyable romp; however, it's not nearly as good as the earlier games in the series. In the earlier games, especially the first one, I felt that I had more control over the conversation. In this game, I feel my role is reduced, and I am required to step in on the 'big' choices. The combat is less evolved than the first game, and much less evolved than other shooters I have played. In the first game, I could holster my gun and I could crouch. In this game, I can't do either. I agree that the ending is an unfitting conclusion to the trilogy.

I am beginning to feel that when people look back at this game they will remember more the fallout from the game than the actual game itself, and I don't think the memories will be bunnies and rainbows.

Well from the bits and pieces I've picked up from this discussion, its pretty much convinced me not to pick up this series.

Don't Let the ending dissuade you. The series is extremely interesting and fun. Most would agree that the series itself is amazing up to the last 10 minutes of it, and due to the outrage over that last 10 minutes there's hope that it will improve.

Personally, I think of Mass Effect as the Star Wars of our time.

That's unfortunate since they're all fantastic games. Indeed, the degree of fuss that's been kicked up over the ending really serves to show how highly gamers regard this series. I mean, who'd care if a crap game has a crap ending?

I'm sure its mostly a good game, but I suspect for me it would be a case of "I'd better not get too attached to these characters, since its all going to end badly for them anyway."
