Somebody shoot me, please. I have so much to say about this and yet I feel so speechless. You know I love you guys but I probably won't be returning to this thread. To say the least, I have no interest in this movie whatsoever.

They felt the need to play up the comedy to appeal to all the people who have never seen the original series, or the the people turned off or growing out of the teen dream vamp. Maybe you would attract those people by just telling a great scary vampire story? I agree with the poster who said they were expecting a Hammer return vibe. Why alienate the people who like the original and are looking for a good vampire tale.

Vampires aren't played. The teen dream dayglow glitter vampire is played. That is not the only kind! DS was not intentionally garish or campy, it just became that way by default thanks to the style of the time. This...this looks like it's mocking something. If we were talking about something more than just a goofy tv show, then I kind of want to say I'm offended.

I know some of the gang will jump down my throat, but there were a lot of other ways to take this story before it got down to the comedy/parody lowest common denominator. Yeah, Jonah Hex thought it would be cool to be some undead bad ass looking western, and what happened? It was a piece of shit. What's wrong with playing something natural first? Look at that Johnny Lee Miller poster. He looks like he is from Clue or something, like he should be twirling a mustache. Why ham it? No one ever intentially hammed it up on the original, and it was popular.

I suspect this will do well, but it will get dismissed quick just like Alice and Charlie. I've long thought these two have lost whatever good they had. It's been played, they are a one trick pony, and they don't know what else to do. Even if the film isn't a comedy, and yes how can you base something on a trailer, but they went for this dumb ass superfly campaign, and it seems to be putting off a lot of people. I definitely will not see this in the theater, if ever.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. DS is a half hour soap from the sixties that survives in 99% entirety when hello Doctor Who has lost its early years. It's a huge media franchise just because of the video it takes for the 1200 plus episodes. With soaps dying, we'll never see something like this again.

The movies were able to step it up and they did and were a success. The Revival laid on the nighttime soap sauce and was actually not that bad. Time slot changes and the Gulf War put it on hiatus and hardly anyone saw it, and it never had a chance to grow beyond any early tweaks. It is considered just as acceptable as the original.

Now, the teen WB pilot change was the one that wasn't picked up, and yeah, the Dawson's Creek type of tv has passed hasn't it? That is when the turn happened. People reaching for straws to try and compete when the original formula is still working 50 years later.

If the original has doen so well and people wanted to see a big screen adaptation. What would have been the best thing to do for the consumer? Give them what they wanted. Why chase unicorns with this hot mess? Those posters look like Wham!

Wow, that was long. I think I should just stick to the frown icon.

i understand why it bugs you so much KB. it certainly isn't the direction i expected the film to take...but i'm optimistic. it looks entertaining. i'm hopeful this film will be similar to Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow had comedic aspects in Depp's performance as the cowardly constable, and those aspects were left out of the trailer, which made it look like Depp was playing a more standard hero. Those involved with Dark Shadows are saying in interviews that the film has comedic elements, but that there's more to it than that.

I cracked up over the Johnny Depp poster. I don't know what I will make of this film, but I will see it. I have a close friend that is a Burton fanatic.

As I mentioned in another thread, the new issue of Horrorhound magazine has a nice retrospective on the original series, including plenty of fun pictures of the old comics, books, and merchandise. (I had completely forgotten about the Gold Key illustrated digest and the View-Master set.)

Yes, and I am saying he shouldn't get his hopes up. By all accounts this is looking like a comedy, not a drama with a few comedic elements, but a comedy.

nice interview. Seth Grahame-Smith said Dark Shadows isn't an overt comedy.
