Eva Green cast as female lead in Dark Shadows

What was fresh and exciting back then (a moody soap opera about an angst-ridden vampire) is now somewhat cliche. You can't just recreate the original show (for the third time!) and expect an audience raised on Anne Rice, Buffy, Angel, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Being Human, and Twilight to react the same way audiences did way when we were kids. Just having a soulful vampire hero is no longer unique or surprising.

This is true.

It's like part "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" and "Beetlejuice" with Burton's typical gothic look.

Knowing what's under the hood from movies like "The Dreamers" and "Camelot" She's even more hotter as a blonde.

That actually looks pretty good, and a whole lot better than Burton's last few movies. It may play up the humor more than the purists would like, but it at least seems to do it in a smart and witty way.

And showing Barnabas having to adjust to life in the 70s just seems like a fun and inspired idea.

It's funny. I was watching House of Dark Shadows again a few months back and it struck me that Barnabas adapts way too easily to modern times. The movie doesn't deal with the issue at all. Barnabas just gets out of his tomb and on with biting people, with no future shock whatsoever.

Guess somebody else noticed that.

I totally didn't think it would be as broad as a comedy as it seems to be...

Of course, it COULD be the focus of the trailer... But this just reminds me of the Addams Family movies... Which isn't BAD per se, just not quite what I was expecting.

I think we're all missing something important about how this movie is best viewed.

"Are you stoned?"

"No but you better be when you see this trainwreck of a movie."

Aaaannndd...I think I'll wait for The Lone Ranger.

The difference is that the Addams Family TV series was ALSO a comedy, so the movies were SUPPOSED to be comedies.

But that was forty years ago. Times change.

I swear, we go through this every time some nostalgic old property gets rebooted. Repeat after me:

1) It's not supposed to be the same as the old version. Otherwise what's the point in remaking it?

2) They're not making this movie for us old-timers. We had our fun way back when. This is a new version for a new generation.

3) Nostalgia is not enough. This movie is not going to live or die on the whims of an aging fanbase. If we like it, cool, but, more importantly, it has to appeal to a general audience who have never heard of DARK SHADOWS . . .

A vampire story set in the gaudy, absurd 1970s is just kooky enough to work, but Depp isn't doing anything different or interesting with this role. He's just playing a vaguely British accented supercilious prig. We've seen that one before. We've also seen it from Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes where it was a lot more charismatic.

Depp needs a new bag of tricks or at least a new schitck. He's only got two: supercilious prig and total lunatic. Which one will he choose for The Lone Ranger, I wonder? Wouldn't it be lovely if he actually does neither for a change?

I'd been assuming this was a rental for me, but now I think even that is being too generous.

So? I don't think I know five people who've SEEN Dark Shadows. Who cares what it WAS?

I'm looking at what they are DOING.

QFT.

i pretty much agree with Greg. as a fan of the original series i think the movie looks fun. yeah, its not like the series...but i'm open to a new interpretation. if it's half as fun as Sleepy Hollow then it will be great.

Come on, why weren't you guys standing up for the Land of the Lost?

Vampires are cooler than dinosaurs. . . :)

Seriously, I was intrigued by LAND OF LOST, but lost interest after I read all the negative reviews. I might have gone to see a good comedy dino flick.

(I remember my college buddies and I all thought Ringo Starr's Caveman was hilarious. Then again, there was usually lots of beer and pizza involved . . . )
