Could Cumberbatch be Garry Mitchell?

Garry Mitchell was already bumped off in the second issue of the nuTrek comic book series, which is retelling TOS stories with the new crew and is supposed to bridge the gap between the two movies.

... but comic books are tie-in fiction, which can be ignored by moviemakers ... so they could show Mitchell dying in the comics, but still use him in the movie. That would really surprise the audience!

Me, personally, I think it's going to be a version of Charlie X, or a character we've never seen before. Charlie had the god-like powers, like Mitchell. Looking forward to finding out when the film comes out!

My vote is for the salt monster too! ... And this time, Kirk, just give the creature a lifetime supply of all-you-can-eat table salt, instead of hunting it down and killing it!

His alleged "fuse blowing" is all part of their PR roll-out strategy, as are the alleged "leaks." ;)

I just want them to move up the schedule, that's all.

Cumberbatch is playing McCoy's Ex?

Oooh! Slashy!

Seriously, are they ever going to tell us? It's only a year or so away!

Considering how upset Abrams got over a picture of Cumberbatch in a black t-shirt ending up on the internet, I can only imagine the fuse he'd blow over the identity of the character he's playing being revealed.
Was J.J. ever actually upset about that, though? How upset was he?

I want video of him losing it over leaked set pics!!

Yes, of course, all we know is that he was upset, we don't know what he was upset about, or if it was over the the pics. Just another example of Abrams's overly draconian mindset he won't actually clarify just what was upsetting him. Probably because it would be official confirmation that Cumberbatch is going to wear a black t-shirt in the movie. And you know that kind of knowledge is going to ruin the movie completely. People actually refuse to see movies if they know the villain is going to wear a black t-shirt. There must be marketing info to back that claim up.

That would be rather... pointless. The comics' storylines are being suggested to IDW by movie's writers, so they'd hardly be wanting to overwrite their own material, or pre-empt it with a comic, just months after approving that storyline. With 79 hours of TOS to choose from, I don't think they'd pick the one episode that they were remaking/revisiting in the new movie. They have said in interviews that the comics provide easter eggs for the movie sequel, not the whole plot.

It's been what over a month since these pics leaked? And still no direct quotes from JJ Abrams about him being pissed. If he's really pissed then the Easter Bunny just crapped on my keyboard. Which he didn't so I don't buy the whole JJ Abrams is pissed about the leak deal.

Perhaps there is, yet it may be too soon for such info to be leaked. I am wearing a black t-shirt.

Those two statements may or may not be related.

Dude! I know way too much about your personal life now! It's like you just handed me your autobiography which covers everything about you starting with the moment your parents conceived you right up to this very moment, with a daily account of your activities, thoughts, attitudes and opinions and a full detailed analysis of your personality.

You must suck at playing poker, giving so much about yourself away.

Accusing Abrams of being draconian in his view on film secrecy is going to be my thing for Trek XII. Just like bitching about the Kelvin's registry was my thing for Trek XI.

This is going to be a lot harder to work into an avatar, though. You know that.

My bet is that he is DTI.

Spock wanting to stay in the past where the Vulcan is still intact would be a great drama.

DTI will have nothing to do with this movie. They're a pretty obscure part of Trek lore, over all.

And besides, according to novel continuity, the DTI is actually founded around the time the Five Year Mission ends (the novel Rings of Time refers to the DTI as a new agency).
