I actually just started getting into it a few months ago, at the suggestion of a friend who said she'd like to see what I'd do with steampunk fashion in my art. I've been doing drawings like these for about 4 months now, and am really rather enjoying them: Even did one as a commission for a poster here at the BBS:
I don't know anyone who participates in the trend, or is probably even aware of it (outside of my husband). So to me it just seems like a cool aesthetic but not something I'd necessarily participate in. I do like the look, though people can get a bit silly with it. And also liberal with the tag "steampunk." Look at Regretsy's "Not Remotely Steampunk" category for some good laughs.
I, too, appreciate the aesthetic and artistry behind the Steampunk genre, but I never got really "into" it and, as such, never got "over it" as there was nothing for me to "get over". To me, it was nothing more than an interesting and artistic sub-culture. I forget who said this (might have even been someone on this BBS), but a fantastic quote I can recall describes Steampunk as "Goths who have discovered the color brown".
Now that is Apt with a capital A! Brilliant! And thanks, guys, I've actually found the aesthetic a lot of fun and will probably do more in its ilk.
^SO sorry! That would be the stress of being unemployed and job-hunting for so long...I haven't been able to afford to make prints, so I haven't been keeping up the shop as I should be. However, I got a job yesterday! (Start next week!) So Should be able to get my shop back up and running, including overseas shipping!
^^ Congrats on the job. So glad to hear it. As for Steampunk, I've loved the idea since reading Lord Kelvin's Machine back in the 80s. I'm surprised it's become so popular of late, but I'm certainly not tired of it. It's not really that pervasive and it's infinitely better than the contemporary fashion of all spaceship interiors looking like factory basements populated with unshaven thugs in leather bondage gear. What I really miss is futures that actually look futuristic.
I like steampunk stuff, although I have more of a thing for the early to mid 20th Century retro aesthetic, such as dieselpunk. But really, anything where past meets present meets future meets fantasy, complete with an implied cheeky nod and a wink in the design, gets a thumbs-up from me. If that makes any sense at all.
I haven't heard of Dieselpunk. I wonder if there's a name for that colorful 50s/60s/Jetsons/Star Trek aesthetic. That would probably be my favorite.
I'm kind of indifferent on the subject of steampunk. I've been on a cyberpunk/transhumanism kick ever since I beat Deus Ex: Human Revolution though. Also, a bit of old-timey Lovecraft horror.
I've never cared much for Steampunk. The style comes across as too dreary to me. I have the same problem with cyberpunk.
