Fight the wind? Seriously, there are places in the country that if the wind blew as hard and for as long as it sometimes does in Kansas, they name it.

Yeah, I'm trying to take advantage of the parks in Northern California because I don't know if we're here to stay or what will happen. But there are so many! I think it's easy to start taking things for granted but I'm determined not to.

If you're into guitars there's the Gibson factory which is pretty cool (in Memphis). There's also lots of blues and other music around. Memphis is a very cool city. I'd love to spend more time there

Keep it up! I'm getting some great stuff here. But honestly, I think my dad's recommendations will take care of all of the Civil War stuff. I'm looking for stuff that I can use to break up the Confederate monotony.
We did Gettysburg on a previous trip more centered on the north. That trip went from Phoenix to Dodge City to Kansas City to Chicago to Niagara Falls to Cooperstown to New York City to Gettysburg to Pittsburgh to St. Louis to Dallas to San Antonio to Roswell and back.
I didn't do the Alamo in San Antonio though. My dad & half-brother did it while dropping me off at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Man, oh man, I wish any of my relatives were as big fans of amusement parks as I am. (No one else was even willing to try the Cyclone when we were at Coney Island.)
BTW, in the South, does anyone know of any good independent roller coasters? And by "independent," I mean not within a larger amusement park; something more akin to the various roller coasters they have at the different hotels around Las Vegas.

(actually, oddly enough I used that exact pic of the Angel as a Facebook picture one Halloween) Pardon, but... San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix, Dodge City, Roswell as "the north"? Especially Dallas?
I think the idea is that, given a starting point in Phoenix, a road trip could easily pass through Roswell, San Antonio, Dallas, Dodge City, Kansas City, etc. on the way to parts generally more northeasterly.

My ex lives in the southern US. You could see him. If you want something to do, smack him across the face for me, as I will likely never see him again and will not have a chance to do so myself.

The Alamo in San Antonio, Johnson Space Center/Space Center Houston, go and see the "Mighty T" Battleship Texas, The San Jacinto monument and Battlegrounds, where TX independence was won, but be forewarned, Traffic in the Greater Houston area is a Bitch with a capitol B
If your going in the summer, I suggest going to Schlitterbahn New Braunfels water park, that whole area is beautiful, and schlitterbahn is a blast... also, Texas is huge, so if your going to points west through Texas, be prepaired to spend alot of time in TX
In Louisiana I suggest New Orleans of course, but make sure you stop in Eunice, or Oppalouses, or Point Breaux(Breaux Bridge) and take in some of the Cajun lifestyle... those coonasses know how to pass a good time!

Chattanooga - Tennessee Aquarium, Rock City, Ruby Falls
Atlanta - Stone Mountain, Georgia Aquarium (frickin' huge whale sharks!), Fernbank Museum, Zoo Atlanta/Cyclorama

With a few notable exceptions the south of the United States is pretty much the economic and cultural backwater of this nation.
While economically it is true that the South is less affluent than other parts of the country, it is extremely wrong to suggest that it is a cultural backwater. I have lived all over the US, and if you think rednecks, assholes, and bigots only live below the Mason-Dixon line, you are sorely mistaken. The worst racism I ever saw was, almost without exception, in the northeast. Those who want to point fingers should clean up their own backyards first.
