Things to see and do in the American South?

^ What's the difference between all of those? I should probably be noting this for when I go. (I will be in Atlanta, St. Pete and Miami for one night each.)

Memphis and Carolinas are more pig influenced, Texas is about cows. That's about all the info you're going to get from this vegetarian.

Gettysburg is in south-central Pennsylvania if you're willing.
There was a battle at Manassas in Virginia.

The OP meant Southern US, not Southern Pennsylvania

:p

South of Long Island Sound, there be dragons. Anyway, Savannah would be a city I'd like to see. Especially in a good season for the foliage. I'd particularly like to visit the Wormsloe Plantation. http://www.pulsarecard.com/r_nature...867_springtime_in_savannah_georgia_42628.html

If you're interested, you could also visit the home of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts, in Savannah. It is a beautiful house and a good example of an antebellum home, as opposed to a plantation.
I meant a home in the city as opposed to a plantation. sorry :)

Thanks for the tip.

as others have mentioned, New Orleans is great. i loved it there. also, if you're up for hiking maybe find a section of the Appalachian Trail.

How much time and how large of an area are you talking? I mean, El Paso to Miami to DC to Little Rock is a pretty large area with tons to do. I'll plug the Great Smokey Mountains Nat'l Park since it's a half hour from me - if you enjoy nature, it's a great place to visit. It's also very close to a major Interstate intersection so easily on the way elsewhere.

If you like music, check Nashville to see if any good concerts will be there at the time of your visit. :)

I would also suggest that if you want some down time to just relax without any pressure to be anywhere at any specific time, that you go to the Gulf Coast. I particularly recommend areas like Ft. Walton Beach or Destin.

Biltmore's a lovely place, it's definitely worth seeing. Asheville in general too, very relaxed small town that's got something of a positive hippie rep in the mountains of western NC

I really like San Antonio's River Walk for the restaurants, when it's not so humid. Also agreed about Virginia Williamsberg. That was one of my highlights of a trip I took which included that, even though I don't like the streets since there are like 3 streets of the same name all over the place and it's easy to get lost.

two, actually
Sorry, it was before my time. I only recall hearing of one.

The North preferred Bull Run. In the North it was the first and second Battles of Bull Run, in the South the first and second Battles of Manassas. They were about a year apart, both Southern victories and very significant battles for both sides.
In the first battle, many people from D.C. rode out to watch the battle expecting a quick Northern victory, it didn't turn out the way they expected at all.

Indeed. We took a road trip out there with two other families when I was quite young. I don't remember a lot of the trip, but I remember that the small part of the park we saw was beautiful.

Be sure to eat at an all-you-can-eat country buffet.. but make sure they don't charge more than $7.50 and offer unlimited free sweet tea. And schedule a nap afterwards. :)
