Could Cumberbatch be Garry Mitchell?

If we're throwing Khan and Q around, why not Garry Mitchell? Its pretty much a story that could be retold better now that there's better tech to work with and its relatively early in Kirk's run as Captain?

It amazes me that so many people here are trying to guess which TOS character Cumberbatch is playing, when there's no official word that he's playing a former TOS character. I would bet he's playing (gasp!) someone new we've never heard of before.

Garry Mitchell was already bumped off in the second issue of the nuTrek comic book series, which is retelling TOS stories with the new crew and is supposed to bridge the gap between the two movies.

Then again, there's something odd about Cumberbunch's eyes in the pics of him grabbing Spock by the throat. It looks like he's got yellow contacts in, but its hard to tell with the poor picture quality. I don't think he's Mitchell, but he could be someone similarly endowed with super powers.

Remember that Kirk was able too take on Khan in a fist fight and win. That's how Kirk had beat him in the first place. He also didn't have any problems in fighting Klingons and he wins every time.

Then again, he did had a problem in winner a fist fight with Gary Mitchell, when Gary had esp power. When Gary didn't have his power, Kirk didn't had any problems in fighting him.

But if you add Khan strength, and intelligent and Gary Mitchell esp powers and Starfleet knowledge? Which will make him a formidable foe and will be very difficultly hard to beat in a fight.

I'd be more likely to suggest Finnegan than Gary Mitchell. An old Kirk nemesis being subdued(?) by Uhura and Spock. Although I thought "Cupcake" in the first film woulda been a fun switch for Finnegan. Can Cumberbatch do an Irish accent?

I still think Norman the android is a possibility, too.

I agree about the baggage but I also think Section 31 has a certain appeal to modern audiences so I wouldn't rule it out. If the plot had need of secret govco stuffs then I think it will be either name dropped or implied. However I don't think they will set out to do a movie where Section 31 features.

Especially when we all know he's playing John Sheridan.

Abrams is not about short-cuts, he likes doing original things. They don't always have to work mind you, but judging from his other works, he likes doing something different.

I mean ffs, he blew up Vulcan! You really think he'll want to rehash existing villians, when it's much more fun and exciting to do something different? And he knows that if he'll do Khan/Mitchell/Mudd/whatever existing character, everybody's going to compare that episode with this film. As a (good) filmmaker, you only want your stuff to be compared to your stuff, not others.

So, long story short, I'm saying original villain.

Look at the similarites between Nutrek and SW.

I know, right? I was so pissed when Abrams put in that light-sabre battle between Anakin and Darth Maul amid the X-Wing fighter attack against the Death Star, while all the while the Ewoks were singing that annoying "nub-nub" song. And all throughout the movie I kept asking myself, "Where are the Jedi Knights? Surely they could be helping Starfleet against Nero right now?"
