Looking for Sci-Fi Readers & Writers' Opinions

Hello!

If this is the wrong section please move this thread.

My name is Parker Jendrycki and I'm a grad student at the University of Illinois. I am conducting research on user generated sci-fi content and looking for your opinion.

If you write and/or read user generated content I would love to hear from you for any/all of these questions.

1. As a writer, would you like to make money from your content?

2. As a writer, if a service existed that allowed you to upload your content and embed it on other websites would you use it?

3. As a reader would you like to be able to read stories in one cohesive document rather than in multiple posts?

4. As a reader would you be willing to pay for regularly updated, high quality content? If not pay, would you view advertisements to support the writer?

Thanks for the time!

-Parker

This should probably be in Fan Fiction, the mods aren't particularly picky about what you post there. As long as it in fan fiction related.

I'm guessing that's what you're aiming at, yeah? Cause if you looking for original stories, that's a whole 'nother deal.

I write both fan fiction and OS so I guess I'm at least halfway qualified.

1. Depending on the story. If its fan fiction, I'm prevented from making money off it by law. If its an original story of my own creation, then yes. I'm quite content posting my stories for free. I enjoy the writing in itself, its relaxation for me, not a way of earning money. But I wouldn't say no to some extra cash.

2. Define, embed. A lot of writers post on they livejournal, wordpress, whatever-they-use pages. Its nothing new.

3. That depends. There are certainly good reasons for reading everything in a bunch. But in my opinion, say weekly updates have their own charm.

4. Yes, for the right stories by a skilled author. It wouldn't be any different from buying ebooks on my Kindle. As for adverts, i certainly wouldn't mind adverts on the authors web page for instance, as long as its not the "jump-in-your-face-prevent-me-from-navigating-the-site" type. Say, something we have here on TrekBBS. Its visible, but not annoying.

I already do make money from my content, but I'd certainly like to make more.

2. As a writer, if a service existed that allowed you to upload your content and embed it on other websites would you use it?
I do that already, too.

3. As a reader would you like to be able to read stories in one cohesive document rather than in multiple posts?
Mostly yes, however I would not be averse to a continued story posted in Blog form.

4. As a reader would you be willing to pay for regularly updated, high quality content? If not pay, would you view advertisements to support the writer?
You mean a magazine subscription? I do that already, too. Under the right circumstances, I'd be willing to do it online.

Thanks for the replies!

@ares - I am new to the community but I think I actually mean original content as it does not come with the copyright baggage that FF does. I know you said you do both so I'm not sure if that changes your ideas at all.

@RJDiogenes - In regards to paying for content I am actually looking more at per story/collection rather than a subscription. The alternative would be advertising of course.

I would have no problem in paying for either a subscription or for individual stories or collections. Like anything else, it would have to be something I wanted.
