[scottyvoice]Khan you all stop with the puns please?
As I have mentioned before, why does THIS Khan necessarily need to have Indian/Sikh heritage? Maybe he was just raised in India, but had British parents.
Inriguing theory...with one major loophole. Nero's alteration of the timeline only goes back as far as 2233, not the 20th century. Khan in the Prime timeline was a native Sikh who was born in India. Why would Khan Singh himself change unless someone had altered 20th century history?
(*Insert Temporal Cold War joke or theory here*)
Meh. I'm not that concerned about having the need for Nero to explain away differences in JJtrek.
I'm ok with some things just being different.
Y'know. If it turns out that Khan is NOT in the movie (and for me, frankly, there has been nothing I would call proof so far), a lot of people here are gonna look kind of silly.

That's guaranteed to happen, regardless of who Cumberbatch is playing.
I suppose that was a bit of the approach I was taking by saying that a person could argue that Montalbahn's Khan may not have been of Indian heritage at all, but rather of Spanish heritage, and maybe just came to power in the Indian sub-continent area (and "Khan" could still be just a nom de guerre). Who knows?I'm taking a khan-do attitude and coming up with a logical reason (or loophole) for why Cumberbatch could be Khan.
First: Why does Cumberbatch have to use his British accent? Think Hugh Laurie.
Second: It's been quite a while since I've seen "Space Seed", but isn't it only implied that Khan is Sikh? Novels may have filled in a lot of blanks, but his on-screen origins are actually murky. Maybe he's not Sikh or even Indian and he just didn't disabuse them of it in "Space Seed". After all, he wasn't carrying a kirpan (that I can remember). You'd think a Sikh of his stature most certainly would. And, none of his fellow travellers or survivors in TWOK looked to be Indian (for what that's worth). You'd think there'd have been a few out of the group.

I understand the intent of TOS probably was that Khan was Indian, but does that really matter?

The late Ricardo Mantalban was born in Mexico.

Montalban's parents were from Spain.
Your point that you consider Montalban to be Mexican kind of supports my argument that if Khan had Spanish parents, but was born and raised in India (and embraced the Indian culture), then some people may call him "Indian".
The same could be argued for JJTrek's Khan. He may be a person born/raised in India, but had parents who were British nationals (there are many Brits in India due to their colonial past), and has embraced Indian culture, and possibly shunned his parents' culture. That person may be considered "Indian" by some, even though his parents were not.
Having said that, I have no idea if BC is playing Khan. I'm just sayin'.
