Steven Moffat wants Cumberbatch to play the Master?!

I'm surprised that it took this long to be posted. This rumour has been around since "Sherlock" Series One concluded and we found out that Cumberbatch auditioned for the Eleventh Doctor. Also I should point out that quote from the article is from an "unnamed source" so take it with a grain of salt. That being said...I've pretty much said from the moment I first saw "Sherlock" that Cumberbatch would make a fantastic Master.

I'm torn, part of me loves the idea, part of me hates it.

I do think he'd make a fab Master though, probably be better cast as the Master than as the Doctor.

all very vague at the moment though, and Cumberbatch is something of a busy boy right now so we'd have to see. Would Simm come back for a regeneration though?

Let's see... a story sourced from 'The Express', with made-up quotes, using the name that's been bandied about since five minutes after the first episode of "Sherlock" ended.

I can smell the bullshit from here.

It's not vague at all to me. This is nothing more than a rumour. Bleeding Cool does this type of stuff all the time with their "stories". Speculation at best. As for Simm coming back for regeneration...he can't regenerate remember? That was why he was resurrected in that ritual in the first place. His body was decaying. I'd imagine that if the Master does return that Moffat will just explain it in some crazy way. As StScoop stated he's been tweeting some interesting things over the last few weeks.

I don't want to be a buzzkill. Cumberbatch as the Master certainly would be cool. But:

-It has long been a fan dream on the internet to have Cumberbatch on Doctor Who, and some of the various roles fans have wanted to see him as are the Doctor or the Master. This sounds like an extension of that wish.

-Isn't Cumberbatch a bit busy at the moment doing something else for the sci-fi community?

Yeah, except Cumberbatch never auditioned for the Doctor. He'd already been cast in Sherlock before any auditions took place for Doctor Who. The actual sequence of events was Cumberbatch was cast as Sherlock, then Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Watson but his take on the character was too odd to provide suitable contrast to Benedict. Matt Smith was then asked to audition for the role of the Doctor.

The Express has a history of stating "sources" related to Doctor Who have said this and that and it's almost always turned out to be incorrect. This is the same paper that insisted Eve Myles had been cast as the replacement for Billie Piper.

Bloody fan rumors...

Actually what we really need is a Sherlock/DW crossover. Maybe a seven minute story for CiN or something.

You're misremembering-- the Master could regenerate when Lucy Saxon shot him, but he chose not to. That was why the Cult of Saxon needed to resurrect him. If his body has stabilized, then he ought to be able to regenerate like any Time Lord.

Ha and some disapproved of my idea

50th anniversary sounds like it could be a perfect time for The Master to return

Imagine Simms with a Silences eyepatch

Flat no.

If Smith regenerates during the 50th anniversary special/specials I'd hate for the eleventh doctor to once again die due to The Master

Correct me if i'm wrong as my classic series history is murky

4th Doctor- Falling while chasing the Master

10th Doctor- Partially the Master's fault due to the nuclear bog still running

And either before or after the regeneration the Master is involved(Castrovalva and Logopolis)

And the Master is sort of responsible for the 7th Doctor regenerating into 8, well he's responsible for the TARDIS diverting to earth anyway...

Although it isn't really relevant to the regenerations, I feel like pointing out that starting with Tom Baker, the Master shows up in the final story of each Doctor with the exception of Christopher Eccleston.

I've got no problem with Cumberbatch playing the Master, but John Simm is still very popular. It would sort of like replacing Roger Delgado midway through his run. Also, frankly, the way things are going the BBC will be lucky if it can continue to afford to pay him to play Sherlock, never mind guest starring on Doctor Who. (Same goes for Martin Freeman once The Hobbit comes out - Freeman's sometimes mentioned as a potential future Doctor.)

True, although we don't know if he was around for McGann's regeneration :)

^ I would have thought it unlikely; he was revived and offered regenerations by the Timelords during the Time War, then fled and hid as Derek Jacobi's character. I got the impression that he hadn't been seen until Ten discovered him.

Of course, this depends on whether or not you presume that Eight or Nine was the incumbent when the Timelords revived the Master.
