German covers for "Worlds of Deep Space Nine"

Impressive! I can't wait to see Andor. I assume it will be Aenar Central standing in for a more standard Andorian city?

Either way, I'm guessing Therin will have a new picture to frame. :)

Cross Cult has since revealed 'Ferenginar' and 'The Dominion' as books five and six. That just leaves Bajor and Andor.

^ Huh, the Dominion and Ferenginar covers were released on the same day as the ones for Trill and Cardassia, only a few hours later, and Bajor was released (and is linked to in the OP) only a few days later. The only one missing is Andor.

Pocket Books should hire these designers!

If I'm not mistaken all new covers for German ST books are made by German comic book artist Martin Frei.

Hmm, I know Sisko is "of Bajor", but I do like them using an actually Bajoran for the cover better. It fits in with the others better, since they used people from that planet.

Neither Ro nor Kira weren't in "Fragments and Omens" that much; Sisko makes much more sense. Although they could have featured Asarem for the first time, since she is featured more than Kira or Ro.

Because when u have the option u go with the biggest name character u can put on the picture.

Second Sisko is more important then any Bajoran anyway and he is their Emissary.

Yet more outstanding work from the artists for Cross Cult. Like others, I think its a shame that the Pocket releases can't feature this beautiful artwork, but unlike them, I don't think Pocket has ever had amazing covers.

Personally, I'd like to see artwork akin to the wonderful Corgi editions of the old Bantam novels.

I'm sure if the artists sent a sample portfolio to Pocket they'd be considered.

One thing to keep in mind. Cross Cult's covers don't get conceived until after the US covers have been out for several months/years. Would you be as impressed if you saw a Cross Cult cover before you saw the Pocket one? ;)

I don't think Pocket has ever had amazing covers.

???

Many of which screamed "published in the 70s"?

Yes, I know that these covers are being made for novels that were released prior, but, as you said, the artists should send their portfolio forward.

I must admit, I might have been a bit OTT in saying that Pocket have never had amazing covers. The artwork for both Watching the Clock and Indistinguishable from Magic was rather beautiful, plus the upcoming Forgotten History. Going further back, the artwork for the first two Stargazer novels were also beautiful.

However, when considering the rather boring Typhon Pact covers and the other Photoshopped covers that we've had over the past few years, I'd rather have the "published in the 70s" covers.

Nonsense - both Kira and Ro had major roles in F&O. Ro was investigating the attack on the village, and Kira was chasing down the culprit. In comparison, Sisko just threw a dinner party.

Because when u have the option u go with the biggest name character u can put on the picture.
This, however, is definitely true.

Also, gorgeous covers.

They weren't boring to me - and they clearly attract the attention of more casual browsers, on bookshop shelves and in online ads - and state efficiently which popular characters feature within.

and the other Photoshopped covers that we've had over the past few years, I'd rather have the "published in the 70s" covers.

Well, if Pocket seemingly prefers Photoshopped to hand-painted covers in the 2000s, they must have their reasons - I assume that hand-painted covers command much higher commissions, and take longer to deliver?

That's exceedingly murky terminology, anyway. Most "hand-painted" works today are created digitally (by hand, using tablets), and more often than not in Photoshop. And if "Photoshopping" is supposed to refer not to the use of the application but the use of photographic source material - well, the linked German covers in this thread sure look like they've been derived from photos to me (especially Sisko).

Meanwhile you have Pocket covers like the one for Greg's The Rings of Time that have a very painterly look to them (it's a stunner, imho).

Very true, Sho. I guess I really don't know what I mean. Its just very rarely have a looked at a cover for a Star Trek book and think "wow, I'd love to hang that on my wall". Just put it down to me being grumpy and the 'language barrier'. :D
