It's gonna be Khan (pretty damn sure now with the pics)

Convinced more than ever it's going to be Khan

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, I doubt it, and I would be disappointed with JJ if he did that. All we know for now is that the villain is or looks human, and has good reflexes. So maybe he's a vampire and Star Trek XII is a Buffy crossover. Or he's just a well-trained fighter. There are so many possibilities (OK, Khan is a bit more probable than the Buffy crossover) that we should not start panicking now.

The villains in this movie are augments, but the cryogenically frozen leader they thaw out is actually actor James Caan who will be playing himself, which still allows for Kirk to make his famous scream. :)

Hell, just because they knocked off Gary Mitchell in one of the new graphic novels doesn't mean he can't be in the new movie. Comics and graphic novels aren't canon in the TREK universe and never have been except for comic book adaptations of the feature films. That said, who knows who the hell Cumberbatch is playing. All we know is he's wearing a black Starfleet undershirt and some uniform pants. That's it. Guy could just be a redshirt who doesn't want to beam down in a landing party and is trying to save his own life by freaking out. :)

Except... that the comics, this time, are being guided by plots suggested by the screenwriters, who are deliberately seeding little easter eggs for the new movie. And that comic has already done the "Gary the God-being vs Former-Academy best friend Kirk", and killed him off. So if there's a Gary story to be told in this movie, it'll be a flashback to earlier Academy days (not supported by Spock and Uhura's uniforms) or some resurrection where we depend on a comic book to know what happened previously.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. I'm going to have to check these comics out if I get a chance.

Although Khan IS in this movie, the character shown with Spock in this scene can not be Khan because TPTB have given him the NuBSG/Starbuck treatment, explaining presence of Nazneen Contractor in the movie.

Although Khan IS in this movie

If you say so. I prefer to withhold concrete statements like that until I learn more about the story.

I hope Khan ISN'T in it, if you want me to be honest. It'd be lazy and unimaginative for a guy like J.J. Abrams to rehash the Khan character in the (what a surprise) second film of the new TREK movie franchise and I expect more and better out of him. But the truth is NONE of us in the general public know for sure. He may be. He may not be.

I'm leaning more towards a big fat "nope." But hey. I'll happily eat crow if my ass is wrong.

we should not start panicking now.

Where have you been? We've been panicking for a couple years now. ;)

People have been panicking since the release of the 2009 movie that wiped out everyone's memories of all prior Star Trek and made their DVD/VHS/Blu-ray/Laserdisc Trek collections disappear from existence.

I remember a pretty sizable panic when we first learned that Kirk & Spock & the gang would be recast. WTF! Gods cannot be recast!!!

If we can survive that, we can survive anything. :rommie:

Oh ye of too much faith. I would not be surprised if this isn't part two of the NuKhan trilogy!

Great. There goes my appetite for dinner.

No TV show that lasts four seasons can be considered a failure.
Well, the fourth season was pretty transparently subsidized to capitalize on DVD sales and maximize syndication revenue.

So it really lasted about three seasons on its own merits, which still isn't bad.

Also, it was dry, tedious, and all-around horrible.
Meh, I'd still take all of ENT (especially the last two seasons) over all seven seasons of VOY.

ENT was a good show. Not on the level of, say, a TNG or DS9 to be sure, but at least in my eyes and the opinions of more than a few people I know it was a refreshing improvement after the myriad disappointments and mistakes of VOYAGER.

I'll take it over the last couple of seasons of TNG, too.:p
