Is Stargate dead... forever?

Pot, kettle, black was the point :bolian:

Not really, as the two franchises are nowhere near comparable in terms of popularity, longevity or quality; Stargate lags far behind in all three.

Popularity and longevity sure, but quality? I wouldn't say so. Bar TNG it was all rather average, and even that show took a couple of seasons to get going. I'd sooner watch early SG-1 and SGU than any of the other shows. I've always found the snobbishnes of Trek fandom somewhat bemusing, especially when it comes to Stargate, BSG, Farscape etc. It's amazing how people forget just how much of the ST franchise is made up of 'meh'.

In my opinion Trek produced 11 seasons of excellent television (I'll leave it to everyone's imagination to figure out which 11, but it probably isn't that difficult) and several excellent movies.

At its best, SG-1 was plotted to the quality of Voyager. The only reason the show was entertaining was because of the characters, and that really dropped once Anderson left the show and the Farscape folks crashed the party.

IMO it's alittle premature to say that Stargate is dead for good. Bringing anything back nowadays takes money that's for sure but, it's not impossible for Stargate to return in some form.

I think it's more than likely that it will return, in one form or another. The brand isn't massive, or even close, but it's recognisable enough that someone is going to want to make some money from it sometime down the road.

Oh, I think it's highly likely that it will be resuscitated. I just find it highly unlikely that it will be anything other than a remake (and probably one more closely resembling the original movie, still the most financially successful and wide-reaching entry of the franchise, than the television series).

SG-1 is what most people think of when Stargate is mentioned. Mention Stargate to a random guy on the street and he'll likely say "MacGuyver in space" or "that one with the big guy with the thing on his forehead." A Stargate remake, will likely be an SG-1 remake.

Eh? Assuming that were true (I doubt it is), what does that have to do with anything? We were comparing the franchises, someone said Stargate never matched Trek in production quality, I disputed that, and then you randomly jumped in and said "Nobody mentioned the production quality. Just the story.".

It's oddly hard to get DVDs of Stargate SG-1 in the highstreet and they're mostly second hand now. New DVDs of Voyager and Enterprise seem easier to come by.

I don't think Stargate SG-1 (while a decent series that was creatively fresh for half a decade) was on principle vastly superior to the latter two Trek shows (who's negative reputations seemed overblown). Though the most bland SG-1 episode was not quite as bad as the most awful VOY/ENT episode. However both TV Star Trek and Stargate shared the essential problem of going on for a bit too long all through the 1990s and 2000s, stretching writers thin and slowly but surely eroding viewer interest.

The Star Trek series cost more on average than the Stargate series did on DVD, so I don't think the Star Trek sets sold as well as they first though so there was a backstock on them. The Stargate Atlantis sets though have been rereleased in slim packs.

I dunno, I see plenty of TNG & DS9 DVDs, and I haven't seen boxsets for Stargate SG-1 properly slimlined (also they ran completely out of stock for years now, according to shop staff I've occasionally asked).

SG1 is also still in syndication on the THIS network so you can still see the show on TV. It's doubtful the SG1 sets will slimmed down soon since it's in Fox's hands now.

If that opinion makes you happy then you're welcome to it, I'm not going to debate the merits of something so ambiguous and subjective as 'story', but production quality? First of all, who cares? And secondly, SGU had comfortably higher production quality than any of the Trek series.

I thought is was dire? At least that's the feeling I get on here.

Yeah, the production quality was nothing to write home about - not nearly as high as Trek's, but then they didn't spend the same kind of money on it.

The production quality was comfortably higher than any of the Trek TV shows, and they spent a lot more money on SGU than they did on ENT if the $1.2m an episode rumours are true.

They didn't need to have that much money part of the reason they filmed in Canada was that their money went futher. The Stargate series were all filmed in widescreen from the start and they started using digital cameras before Star Trek did. The White House sets used at the of season seven were on loan from the second X-Men movie so at times they did use movie quality sets. And actors like Lou Diamond Phillips and Claudia Black both complimented the high quality of the series.
