I think my girlfriend is a Christian! Advice needed.

I thought that creationalists do believe in evolution, but they believe that god is what kicked it off or is behind it all?

No, Creationists believe in a literal 6-day Creation. No dinosaurs, no evolution, nothing--all that stuff is either made up by scientists or made up by God to test the faithful, depending on who you ask.

Hmm, this isn't true at all. I am surrounded by creationists, and not a single one of them (myself included) would ever say anything like that.

I was engaged to a creationist for several months, both her and her family, their "church" (extended family and friends) believed exactly this kind of shit. They even mass-prayed over anything that was made in China to "pray the demons out".

They hid a lot of this behaviour at first but as time went by the amount of crazy shot up. By the time I left (escaped really) they were up to the "Humans riding dinosaurs" stuff, and believing every bit of it.

The sadest part was her 13 year old brother who was genuinely curious about the world and always wanting to learn, spouting their nonsense that Evilution was wrong and that monkeys were unclean things on the Earth we bore no relation to.

Yeah, I've met those types. Sigh.

Lumi, the stuff about there being cave paintings of humans with dinosaurs is bunk. Those stories are either made up out of whole cloth or high misinterpreted.

I think it's fine to believe that God (or whichever deity) created the universe and set things in motion. There's really nothing in there that's incompatible with science. But there is no validation to the idea that Earth is any younger than 4.5 billion years.

There's also no good reason to believe in "Intelligent Design," unless one wants to believe God is a profoundly incompetent designer. Human bodies are quite shit in a lot of ways, and you'd think an intelligent designer would do a better job. Instead, our bodies (and those of virtually all species) are full of cruft from millions of years of evolutionary trial-and-error.

I think there's nothing wrong with believing in god as well as accepting scientific facts. You can be religious and still believe in evolution. If you dismiss all religious people, well, you're dismissing a huge chunk of the human population. I'm not religious by any stretch of the definition and I accept evolution and science, but still somewhere in my head I still have a faint belief in something. I don't know what to call it, but I believe in it. So, if I can be dismissed by people like Dawkins or who ever, I believe that's an extremely unfair dismissal.

Dismiss you? What does this even mean? When has Dawkins ever suggested he dismisses you wholesale because of your beliefs?

He dismisses other's beliefs because he doesn't believe they are true, this does not equate to "dismissing all religious people". Do you seriously think he or likeminded people dismiss any and all information that come to them via a person with religious beliefs, just because they have such beliefs?

Maybe it's one of those euphemisms, like how the Nazis "evacuated" Jews from Europe. By "dismiss," he means we're going to round up and kill believers. Or something.

Two articles about debunking the Kachina Bridge "dinosaur" are at http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/dinosaur/2011/03/debunking-the-dinosaurs-of-kachina-bridge/ and http://hudsonvalleygeologist.blogspot.com/2011/03/kachina-bridge-dinosaurs.html. The second includes an unenhanced photograph of the rock face.

An example of creationist disinformation and misinformation, including about the Kachina Bridge "dinosaur", is at http://www.genesispark.com/exhibits/evidence/historical/ancient/dinosaur/.

I can't be certain that I believe in a literal six day creation, but I do believe that we have an intelligent creator. Whether he did it all in a week or three hundred years is irrelevant to me.

Also, rather than anyone claiming dinosaurs never existed (? never heard this one before), creationists (young earth, anyway) believe that they roamed the earth much more recently than the evolutionists will claim. Recently enough for them to appear on cave drawings next to all of the other animals. :p

Agreed, I have similar views to you I think, and I wouldn't have ever said that dinosaurs didn't exist- that would just be ignorant.

Maybe the cavemen found dinosaur bones and put them together so they could tell what dinosaurs would look like and that's why there's dinosaurs in some cave paintings.

She wasn't at college today. :( At first I thought it might have something to do with me, but her friend said she was just ill. Seems convenient. She's only replied to about 40% of my text messages as well. Thinking back, I did rush out of her house pretty fast on Saturday. I hope I didn't freak her out.

I'm definitely going to confront her with my beliefs the next time I see her. I know some of you say it isn't important, but I really feel strongly about my atheism and I can't go any longer without telling her. I've been tell people in my life too: I told my mom and she looked shocked and said it was just a phase. But she acted like normal the next time I saw her.

My old buddy Beau who I used to wrestle with is a bigtime Christian and is even going to be part of a Christian wrestling show. When he told me about the show I could tell he was hinting that he wanted me involved (I've done refereeing in the past) but I couldn't lie to him and said "I can't be involved, I'm an atheist and I don't believe in your message." He didn't say anything at first then said he wasn't going to ask me to be involved anyway and he respected my belief. But it sounded frosty. We haven't spoken since and I fear our friendship is over.

Thames didn't care. He doesn't care about much since he lost custody of the twins. Ironically I think turning to religion could really help him right now, but I'm not going to suggest that lol!

I might actually write all of my philosophy down in a letter and read it out to her, just to make sure I get everything in there.

The Flintstones is not a documentary.

Interesting you've sent her enough texts in order to deduce a percentage of them that have been answered.

Thinking back, I did rush out of her house pretty fast on Saturday.

Ya think?!

I'm definitely going to confront her with my beliefs the next time I see her.

We'll see.

I know some of you say it isn't important, but I really feel strongly about my atheism and I can't go any longer without telling her.

No. Her Christianity isn't important, particularly how it conflicts with your Atheism a balance can be found and in face many have been emphatic that you discuss your individual theological beliefs with one another in order to resolve any conflicts they may have. Rather than, you know, making assumptions and poking around in her computer.

I've been tell people in my life too: I told my mom and she looked shocked and said it was just a phase. But she acted like normal the next time I saw her.

So you're still at the age, or mental growth, where your parents say you're "going through a phase." This tells us much.

My old buddy Beau who I used to wrestle with is a bigtime Christian and is even going to be part of a Christian wrestling show.

Ugh. Introducing new secondary characters now? And a "big-time Christian" and "Christian Wrestling" shows? What the fuck?

When he told me about the show I could tell he was hinting that he wanted me involved (I've done refereeing in the past) but I couldn't lie to him and said "I can't be involved, I'm an atheist and I don't believe in your message." You're missing that part of your brain between your mouth and thoughts aren't you? Whatever comes to mind just blurts out like you have some fucked-up form of Tourette's. And what particular "message" do you not agree with Christians? Being nice to one another? Not fucking cousins?

Thames didn't care.

Thames!

He doesn't care about much since he lost custody of the twins. Ironically I think turning to religion could really help him right now, but I'm not going to suggest that lol!

Worst. Atheist. Ever. Also: Worst. Friend. Ever.

I might actually write all of my philosophy down in a letter and read it out to her, just to make sure I get everything in there.

Or you can just read her these threads.

No. People don't just "walk up" on dinosaur bones. Stop it.

She wasn't at college today. :(
This is a subtle clue that you're not American, as we don't say "at college"...because it sounds stupid.

At first I thought it might have something to do with me,
Well, that's not psychotic at all.

but her friend said she was just ill.
I'm glad that you're not only stalking her, but involving her friends. I'm sure they'll side with you at the upcoming deposition.

Seems convenient.
Yes. TOO convenient. :shifty:

She's only replied to about 40% of my text messages as well.
If you've sent her enough text messages that there's a sizable percentage she's NOT responding too...you've sent too much, Casanova.

Thinking back, I did rush out of her house pretty fast on Saturday. I hope I didn't freak her out.
I'm guessing it's the dozens of texts that did that. Although the comical exit probably didn't help.

I'm definitely going to confront her with my beliefs the next time I see her.
EXCELLENT. We all know Christians don't feel persecuted enough. Take this snooty bitch down a peg.

I know some of you say it isn't important, but I really feel strongly about my atheism and I can't go any longer without telling her.
I hate militant atheists.

I've been tell people in my life too: I told my mom and she looked shocked and said it was just a phase.
Because you go through lots of phases, like a 12 year old girl.

But she acted like normal the next time I saw her.

Sounds like a lucrative endeavor. I'm sure I'll be reading about it in the Wall Street Journal next fall.

When he told me about the show I could tell he was hinting that he wanted me involved (I've done refereeing in the past)
You've also wrestled. You're forgetting your own continuity. Don't be the Enterprise of Misc.

but I couldn't lie to him and said "I can't be involved, I'm an atheist and I don't believe in your message."
Because if atheists believe in anything, it's not "shutting the fuck up and just doing it for the money because of my "not-a-religion".

He didn't say anything at first then said he wasn't going to ask me to be involved anyway and he respected my belief.
Sounds like a pretty shitty or lazy Christian.

But it sounded frosty.
Because he didn't mean it.

We haven't spoken since and I fear our friendship is over.
Because it is. I'm sure if you've opened up about any number of things you've done in the past you've given him more than enough Biblical reasons to shun you.

Thames didn't care.
Thames=Honeybadger

He doesn't care about much since he lost custody of the twins.
Did I miss a season?

Ironically I think turning to religion could really help him right now, but I'm not going to suggest that lol!
That's not irony as much as it's hypocrisy...you know...the study of hippos.

I might actually write all of my philosophy down in a letter
Who the fuck talks like this?

and read it out to her, just to make sure I get everything in there.
Make sure you insult everything she believes in and call it all a lie. You'll be inside her anus in less than a fortnight!
