Beetlejuice is being rebooted

Well, if we're using reboot as what it is -- a marketing buzzword with no real meaning -- then, sure, why not? But if we're using it to describe a remake of a franchise, these things clearly aren't those. They're sequels/spin-offs. Sure, there are some changes, but they're meant to be in line with what came before.

^ I agree. I prefer it to mean a new starting-over of a series, along the lines of Batman Begins or Casino Royale. But let's face it, Hollywood will use any in vogue buzzword that it thinks will put bums on seats and apply any meaning to it. Re-imagining, revival, spin-off, re-boot... call it what you want.

Yeah, it's more a sequel that's just being made while specifically keeping in mind all of the young people that never saw the original, like Tron Legacy or Superman Returns.

I haven't seen Tron: Legacy, but as far as I know it's a straight sequel to Tron. Superman Returns, on the other hand, is really only a solid sequel to the first Superman film, implicit updating to the modern era aside. It's a quasi-sequel to Superman II ( some significant fudging is required, and Singer has expressed a divergence from certain elements of that film ), and a non-sequel to Superman III and IV.

Bump!

"It's a reality in the sense that I met with Michael Keaton last week," [Writer, Seth] Grahame-Smith told us. "We talked for a couple of hours and talked about big picture stuff. It's a priority for Warner Bros. It's a priority for Tim. Right now, I am writing an animated movie for Tim based on an idea of mine. Then I adapt Unholy Night [based on the upcoming book]. The third I am hoping is Beetlejuice in terms of writing schedule."
And what was Keaton's excitement level like?
"Huge," the writer added, "he's been wanting to do it for 20 years and he'll talk to anybody about it who will listen. I really told him, I have a huge reverence for Tim and a huge reverence for that film in general. I don't think we should do it if we shit on the legacy. He agrees. So, right now, it remains to be seen, I have a couple of story ideas, but we're very early out."

The writers have always made it clear that they want him back and IIRC he was always up for it. My concern would be that the studio would nix him as he's not exactly hot box office material these days.

Your point is valid but Beatlejuice is not sure fire box office material either. Something like this bound to nostalgia more than anything else. So much of the character was not created in the script but adlibbed by Keaton on set. EDIT I think the only real interest in another Beatlejuice film would be with Michael Keaton returning. Tim Burton wants this and has clout in the business.

^ But if a studio executive is told 'It was a big hit for Tim Burton and features a white-faced manic funny ghoul', he's probably just going to think 'Great, get Burton back and put Johnny Depp in the lead, instant box office hit. Michael who?'

Well my edit address your reply, which was not up when I started to edit.I think Burton won't do this without Keaton. He has had enough success to have clout to get what he wants. The first movie is so much defined by his unique directing style I can't imagine it working with someone else making it. Also even the orginal film had other actors than just Michael Keaton. No reason to think this would not be the same, with more current stars to fillout the cast.

^ I hope you're right but let's not forget that Burton and Keaton haven't worked together since Batman Returns, some 20 years ago. If the studio offers him a wodge of cash to make a sequel with his current BFF, Mr Depp, I think he'd probably do it.
