I think my girlfriend is a Christian! Advice needed.

That article says nothing about abolishing anything, just countering and criticising its influence with rational arguments. If I am comfortable with a belief, I have no problem defending it against criticism.

I find it amusing how many people proclaim that every atheist they have met has been an asshole. Of course, I am sure all atheists declare their atheism to everybody they meet at the first opportunity, it's not possible you could have met lots of atheists and not even known it.

I can honestly say every asshole I've met has been an asshole.

You act like assholes are inherently assholish, WTF? Not all assholes are assholes.

I really hate to be judgemental, but I admit there is a stereotype of Atheists maybe not being assholes, but being way high on a high horse, or ironically, holier than thou. Even on this board and in this thread I've read stuff saying Christians are evil, or religion is evil and I have to ask why lump everyone who is a christian into that group. Actually, the people I hate more than those kind of atheists are the religious nuts who think everyone should follow them.

I don't want to hate Atheists, as I'm sure they are good people, but it seems to me the those who are actually respectful of other's beliefs (Not tolerant or agreeable, but respectful) are few and far between.

Also, it works both ways. Because of some religious nuts, all Christians are evil, according to some of the replies in this very thread. Please.

Not to break the fourth wall for the unbelievably oblivious amongst us, but do you know any stereotypes about people who go on insulting generalizing rants about atheists based on completely fucking obvious joke threads?

Apparently I wasn't at the Legion of Atheists lair when we elected the newly converted Dark Lord of Atheism MadBaggins as our speaker for promoting the evils of religion and our agenda of global secular domination. Did no one send out a memo?

The only person acting that way in this thread was the OP and he's an emotionally stunted cousin-fucker. Just keep that in mind.

This was a joke thread? I thought it was a thread on the original poster wanting advice. I guess I missed something.

I will say I went back and read some things in this thread taken on context after reading the same thing last night and being insulted by it and I think I owe everyone an apology. I didn't know this was a joke thread, but even based on that, I shouldn't have made that sweeping generalization, especially based on what I originally posted in this thread.

I will say though I really don't like being judged on religion and I guess I did the same thing which is a bit hypocritical.

I will only add virtually all atheists I met - but one or two - were of this sort, yelling at me for being "religious" (I'm not, merely agnostic and skeptical towards this evangelical atheism).

No, most atheists you've met... you didn't even know were atheists.

I was thinking a lot about many of the great debates we've had in this thread today and wondering if I'd been in the wrong. I know people say religion doesn't cause harm, but think about the Dark Ages. I read once that if it wasn't for religion stopping science for hundreds of years, we'd have colonies in other galaxies by now. But because of religion, we won't even have bases on the sun in my lifetime. It makes me sad.

All of this was waiting heavily on my mind as I went to meet my girl friend at the church. I decided 100% in my head that I would tell her EVERYTHING today and tell her ALL my concerns. I'd start by telling her how much I liked how and all the things I like about her. Then I'd just come right out and tell her I'm a bigtime atheist and ask what her beleifs are and see if we could find a way to make it work...

We worked together in virtual silence for almost twenty minutes. It was tiring and I needed a break. I needed one mentally as well. She asked what was wrong. This was it, now or never.

I plucked up my courage and came right out and said "I really really really like you!" She smiled, her beautiful smile that she doesn't show very often. I felt special that she'd used it on me. I began listing her many many man good points. She looked really taken aback. When I'd finished I stopped and started to think about what the best way to say "I'm a bigtime atheist" would be.

But before I could say anything, she kissed me! It nearly blew my mind, I can tell you. I asked what she was doing and she said she really really really liked me too! She said at first she wasn't sure about me but I'd proven myself with my tireless charity work and by not trying to make a move on her at any point, even though we'd been alone together in the back of a church sometimes for hours. I was so happy. But also concerned because I knew I had to tell her. I started to speak but she said "just stop!" and we laughed and kissed again for a long time. I knew that I didn't have to worry about what Darth Duck said, she wasn't the kind of Christian girl who wouldn't have sex. I could tell as we kissed that she'd be willing to.

Then I realized that I still hadn't told her the truth and, even though I wanted to, it would have been wrong to make love to her at this time. I quickly told her that I'd just remembered I had to babysit for my best friend Thames and had to go soon. I aplogized for not doing more work. She laughed and said we'd been sorting through donations that had already been sorted, she'd only told me there was work to do to spend time with me and see what kind of a person I was! Turns out she can tell lies too, so I didn't feel as bad after that. We made out for a while longer before I left. I'm proud of myself for not taking advantage of her.

Well I think I can call her my "girlfriend" again now lol. Maybe I'll see how things go before telling her the truth. It's not like I've lied outright yet, even though Picard says a lie of omission is still a lie. I have a good feeling about our relationship. I think we are very compatible.

Yeahhh. I don't think a few hundred years of supposed slowed development would've given us the ability to colonize galaxies let alone the friggin SUN!!!

Everything, everything? Or selective-everything, everythng?

It was tiring and I needed a break.

WE! WERE! ON! A! BREAK!

I plucked up my courage and came right out and said "I really really really like you!" She smiled, her beautiful smile that she doesn't show very often. I felt special that she'd used it on me.

Alright! Not so Christian then, I take it?

I began listing her many many man good points. She looked really taken aback. When I'd finished I stopped and started to think about what the best way to say "I'm a bigtime atheist" would be.

Dude. You've made out with girls before and have even slept with them. You remember this, right?

She said at first she wasn't sure about me but I'd proven myself with my tireless charity work and by not trying to make a move on her at any point, even though we'd been alone together in the back of a church sometimes for hours. I was so happy.

Yes, the tireless work you've shown over the course of the last couple of days.

I quickly told her that I'd just remembered I had to babysit for my best friend Thames and had to go soon.

Thames!

I aplogized for not doing more work. She laughed and said we'd been sorting through donations that had already been sorted, she'd only told me there was work to do to spend time with me and see what kind of a person I was! Dude, she's not an android or a Vulcan, there's no reason to think she can't tell lies.

Well I think I can call her my "girlfriend" again now lol.

I dunno, I would think dates, finding common interests and stuff like that would be required before calling her your girlfriend. All you have now is a make-out partner.

Maybe I'll see how things go before telling her the truth.

Yeah, play with her heart some more.

It's not like I've lied outright yet, even though Picard says a lie of omission is still a lie. I have a good feeling about our relationship. I think we are very compatible.

Omission is a form of lie, hell even the courts would see it as one.

yeah, Dawkins is IMO about as dangerous as Al Qaeda.
Lulz.
A little embellishment, yes, since there is no militant atheist organization trying to kill us all.

But I would say he is almost as bad as that fat religious fuck that died a few years back.... Falwell was it?
2.5 for prosaic thinking and lazy research. Needs improvements.

I may have overstated certain things, as I do have a talent for that, but it's the fact that most of his followers these days are not evolutionary biologists - it's evangelical atheists who want all religious people gone or converted to their belief. Is that so much different from militant Christians or muslims? Just the belief in question is changed, replaced with something that does indeed sound logical (science), but that's why it's IMO so dangerous - because it's a prejudice that uses a fair sounding subjects as its facade.

If militant atheists are not killing people yet it's either because it's "yet", or because it will go out of fashion before it gets out of control.

(...)

I would also like to thank everyone for remaining fairly civil despite the difficult problem at hand and my overstated statement.
4.5 (a fairly high score) for correct sentence structure and thanking people for their civility after making obviously incendiary and insulting comments. That was quite artful.

"Almost all atheists think almost all Christians are evil, how wrong of them to generalise like that! I know it's true because I saw some nasty atheists on a message board!"

Give me a break

That isn't what I said at all.

Also, it works both ways. Because of some religious nuts, all Christians are evil, according to some of the replies in this very thread. Please.

Are you sure you haven't confused "virtually all atheists I met" with "watching Bill Maher's mockumentary 'Religulous' on a late-night movie channel"?

And I have no interest in defending it against criticism, especially IRL. I'm not criticizing their beliefs, if they are going to criticize mine they can fuck off. If my beliefs are not imposing anything on their world what do they care.

Only the assholes are assholes, and the same can be said of any dearly held tenet. You don't notice the perfectly nice and respectable people who are atheists or religious, only the ones in your face.

I hope you continued reading after you wrote this. Hopefully all is good.

I know I haven't been following the last fourteen pages of conversation, but I read your opening post and I think you need to relax a bit. The fact that she goes to church is generally a very good thing. Church connections can be one of the best ways to get involved in your community and to join to causes to help people around the world. Off the bat, you sound seriously judgmental, so tone that down. Be respectful. Christians make up some of the most thoughtful, caring, and giving people in my life-- as do some devout Jewish friends, Mormons, and here in Japan Buddhist friends as well; other very close, thoughtful mentors in my life are agnostic, humanist, and anything under the sun. If you would reject someone for a label or belief system, then you are the one missing out, not her. There's a lot to learn in this world spiritually that doesn't come from Richard Dawkins on YouTube :).

Amen to all that.

Well put.
