Star Trek Magazine 39 on sale soon

I'm loving it! With DRG's two novels, Beyer's The Eternal Tide, Martin's Fallen Gods and Mack's TNG trilogy, the second half of 2012 will be a great time to be a Trek lit fan!

ETA: I saw there was no mention of Una McCormack's Typhon Pact novel? I hope it's only because the novel was announced after the article had already been written, because I'm really looking forward to that one too.

The issue went to press before the New Year, hence the casting news on the movie being out of date, and any additions like Una's novel.

What, you mean Benecio Del Toro isn't in the movie? :)

Well, at least his name contains the letters of the name "Benedict"...

No, I managed to get that altered (although I was told to not be definitive about it!). Peter Weller and Alice Eve's casting made it, but not Benedict or Noel Clarke....

I love the idea of Mack's Cold Equations trilogy, but do we really need another "all life in the galaxy will be wiped out" storyline?

Based on what Dave and I discussed about it back in October, I'd say that's an oversimplification of what it's really about. But putting it that way helps to preserve the surprise, I guess.

I knew David Mack had standards.

I thought Destiny was as galaxy-epic as we would get for a while but I am happily wrong.

If Destiny was awesome and set new standards in Trek and the new trilogy is the story he always wanted to write then I am going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Hmm, if the Beta Quadrant got it in Destiny does this mean it's the Alpha Quadrant's turn?

^ I am not trying to out-epic Destiny. This is a very different approach to a trilogy than that project was; instead of one epic story in three volumes, these are three related but separate stories with some linking narrative elements and themes. The last thing I want to do is try to repeat the Destiny trilogy.

Is Cold Equations the official name? If so, a nice nod to the popular short story, and an intriguing choice. Does it hint at a thematic link?

Yes, the trilogy is titled Star Trek: The Next GenerationCold Equations. The nod to the Tom Godwin short story is intentional — and it definitely hints at the thematic link between the three books, each of which will be a self-contained narrative.

OK, that sounds very very exciting then :). Thanks!

Everyone, have a go at the story if you've never read it!

Edit: Or this version that has a salient preface by Jim Baen which hints at the considerable controversy over the realism of the story, which indeed does nothing to lessen its impact. In fact, I always felt that the immediate reflex to prove the story wrong that many have is great proof of that.

Point taken. Mistook the spoilers in the magazine but early spoilers are often misleading or misinterpreted.

"Wiping out all life in the galaxy" suggests something epic, but as Christopher said maybe that was wide of the mark.

The authors are having a ball playing "I know something you don't know" at my expense. :shifty:

And I'm still going to buy the books.

I'll just say that I consulted Christopher during story development on the Cold Equations trilogy, to obtain his advice on a number of topics in which I know his scientific expertise far exceeds my own.

In my head, I now picture Captain Mack - the fast-and-loose let's go get 'em type, always with his heart in the right place - leaning forward in his bridge chair, looking expectantly at a calmer and very sharp Christopher, who is staring at a manuscript through his sensor hood, displaying a mien of profound concentration ...

When I have the books in my hand, I will paraphrase Captain Picard: "Let's see what's in there..."

I'm looking forward to the book regardless of its contents, the author is draw enough.

Also on that note, David, will you have a spare year any time soon to write a sequel to The Calling?

Too kind. :)

I honestly don't know. I'll be writing the Cold Equations trilogy until the end of June, and after that I'm considering a couple of new original projects. But after that … who knows?
