Janeway wins in a poll of 10,000 people..

JANEWAY: The Alpha Quadrant still largely unexplored. Romulans hiding behind every nebula.

<snip>

Space must have seemed a whole lot bigger back then.

Substitute Borg for Romulans and this describes her experience in the Delta quadrant. Except unlike Kirk she was all alone, no Starfleet backup.

<more snippage>
But I have to admit, I would have loved to ride shotgun at least once with a group of officers like that.

I think you can see that at time, a certain enjoyment of being on frontier space in the DQ.

I would have not believed janeway would win this type of poll, but am happy that she did. It should say something for the actress playing her and the character being played.

I've always said Janeway was the most like Kirk and I think their response to events demanding action were similar.

And I would agree.

I would also like to say that popularity contests,

whether they be startrek.com polls,

dancing with the former stars tv reality shows,

or top 10 bad ass women like...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrrrK0yTNJY (loved the inclusion of Bonnie from B&C)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHO0gYMHRj4&feature=related (oooo YES! This one included Miss Parker! And Scully! And Gabrielle! And Aeryn!... and... oh just sit back and ENJOY!)

Afterall, who's popular with me may not be who's popular with you, and that's okay. My enjoyment of Voyager doesn't depend on whether or not Janeway wins a poll. She'll always be number one with me, as will the series. These polls are just out there to make us chuckle. No need for WWIII to be declared.

Just wondering how happy the Roddenberry would be-had he lived to see it-a female captain as a regular lead in a Star Trek series?

Well in the beginning, the network said: You can have the alien or the woman, but you can't have both.

With Jeff Hunter bowing out, Majel should have been a Captain and the lead in the 60s.

A rather...enchanting point of view my friends. I am not saying Roddenbery was better than Berman (that's for another debate) but I thihk secretly he would be pleased they got a woman in there without relying on her having a status as a sex symbol.

Compared to other female cast who arguments could be made were cast solely for their looks, Mulgrew had the intelligence and wit to make Janeway work as a rounded character.

Season one TNG.

Yar looked like a man.

Dee was a butter ball. (I was 10 when this started, even regular sized women looked like a Brobdingnagian to me.)

Gates had the dye job of a woman twice her age.

"Sigh"

I don't think my ears pricked up about any of the female guest stars till Ashley Judd was making time with the boy genius.

I was merely trying to pay homage to the Janeway character as being different from what came before. I appreciate all of your remarks, my friends.

For some reason, people who vote on www.startrek.com love Voyager. I think among casual fans "Voyager" is very popular because its definitely the kind of show you can dip into easily and get your fair share of boobs and action of the week.

Frankly the results of those polls are often a total joke, apparently the season finale of "Voyager" gave people the most closure. LOL WUT, way to not use your brains voters ;-)

It might be that Voyager does well there because Voyager fans are more comfortable in that environment, not because they are "casual" fans. Here, it is a sport to put Voyager down whenever possible. :rolleyes:

All polls on the internet are a joke, even the ones on the TrekBBS. However, it's always a kick when Janeway or Voyager comes out on top. :)

In my country casual fans will be TNG fans. To go past TNG you had to have been a bit more into your Trek. And if you're an ENT fan you have to be hardcore as it was almost impossible to watch, being aired at 11pm or later.

Yar didn't look like any man I've ever seen-short haircut does not equal "looks like a man."

And season 1 Gates is hot.
