A man in Vegas placed a $1000 bet with 50:1 odds that the Giants would make the first score in the Super Bowl with a safety. He won.

And how do you only get 50:1 odds on that?

But it earned an intrepid and doubtlessly inebriated Las Vegas better a $50,000 payout.

With odds of 1,000-1 that the first points in Sunday’s game would come off a safety, a bettor at the MGM Grand placed $1,000 on that unlikely scenario.

1,000:1 odds, a $1,000 bet, shouldn't he get $1,000,000?

I don't know how sports betting works, but that seems logical to me.

Yeah I phrased it wrong that the Giants would score first with a safety, courtesy of NE. Not sure how the odds were calculated I would have figured them longer than that. I mean how often does even a safety get scored let alone it being the opening score in the Super Bowl.

I know the Bears got one in XX, but I don't remember if it was the first score.

I also think the Bills got one against Dallas in XXVII, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the first.

Okay, the Bills safety was XXV vs the Giants, not against Dallas.

The first safety in Super Bowl history was also the first score of the game in IX:
PIT - Safety: Dwight White tackled Fran Tarkenton in end zone 2-0 PIT

The Giants got one in XXI as well as XLVI.

The Cardinals got one on a holding penalty against the Steelers.

So it looks like there have been five. An interesting note...

Either the Steelers or Giants have played in every Super Bowl in which a safety has been scored.
