It's hard to believe considering how many times we see four or five stock shots of the ship over and over again.
A phaser shoot is a VFX too. :)

As are viewscreens, transporter beams, torpedos, windows when at warp, shuttles, planets, many medical instruments, background mattes, splitscreening the same actor with themselves, space-babies, time vortexes, asteroids, explosions...ah, you get the idea.

1,700 sounds about right to me. (1,701 sounds better. ;) )

Haven't got my disc yet unfortunately.

There are samples from Sins of the Father and Inner Light online but with german audio. I ran them side by side with the SD version and the difference in detail and colour is brilliant.:techman:

Hope my disc comes tomorrow.

The picture is amazing. Makeup and costumes really stand out for me as being far more visible/brilliant than before. Yar and Troi's makeup in particular.

The videos look outstanding. I can't wait to get my copy later today. The only thing that really stood out to me is that the font in the credits does look quite a bit "curvier" than the original. Very minor and it could just be that was what was used in EoF to begin with (it's been a while since I saw it).

The thing I love the most about the HD titles (apart from the people in the Observation Lounge) is that they finally filled-in the huge gap between the primary and secondary hulls during the first warp entry. I never noticed until recently the switch to the 2-footer, or that all the window lights went out after the warp flash, but that cut-out has bugged me since I was a kid!

And the saucer sep: http://youtu.be/wp_wznCVHHs

Mostly good, but I did notice the model wobble a bit in a couple of shots.

In both scenes, something bugs me, and I think it's that there's not the right amount of motion blur on the deflector or impulse engines at high speeds. The stand out a bit too much, IMHO.

I'm not "bitching" though, just commenting.

I'm surprised the opening credits look identical, I always assumed (I guess incorrectly) the planets were CGI or something.

A lot of people were asking for the opening credits in HD and here are the Season 3+ credits. It really does look lovely and I wish I had the money to get this.

Wow, every Target store within a 50 mile radius was entirely sold out.
Fry's didn't have it yet...odd they usually have all launch day titles.
of course Best Buy didn't have it...unless its a really big movie they usually get them later.

should have got it from amazon....

I like that the blue glow around the lower left is gone. I think that was caused by the titling hardware overlay of the time.

Also like how the warp of the ship looks now, looks more natural. I always thought the original looked a bit strange, when the ship stretched.

Fantastic!!

Thought waiting for these sampler views was tough, now I gotta wait how long for the season sets to appear??? :scream:

No way I'm going to be able to stick to watching one ep a week to stretch out the time between releases :klingon:

Believe me Amazon is no saint here, they used something called Smart Post to send mine (guaranteed for delivery on day of release) well long story short, it didn't arrive yesterday. And I can't get confirmation where it is, because with Smart Ship, Fed Ex picks it up from Amazon, then delivers to your local post office!?

Hopefully it will be there this afternoon when I get home.

I went to a couple of stores to look around, I asked some of the employees, most copies were sold out, Best Buy had one left and it was reserved....cool

I wonder if Paramount under estimated the demand.

Target initially had 8 copies per store (so I was told)

I seem to remember Amazon used to always deliver discs on or sometimes
the day before an official release (if you ordered it at least 1 week prior)

I heard somewhere you don't get that now unless your an amazon prime member.

I'm surprised the opening credits look identical, I always assumed (I guess incorrectly) the planets were CGI or something.

I wish the planets were redone in CGI. They now look too 'static' in the higher resolution. What would Jupiter look like if we could view it up close? Would the storms and clouds stand still or would they not move as we viewed them? That would be the improvement I would ask for in the credits, and for the Season 3-7 version (which I haven't seen yet), the proto-planetary disk dust around the star should also be animated to look as real as possible.

More from Rick Sternbach

The season 1 opener was, if I recall, done with a combination of film and video elements, plus miniatures like the ship. I don’t remember if the planets were miniatures or texture mapped CG objects; I didn’t work on the first version.
