Orci: improvements to engine room?

Using a brewery for a set is not the end of the world. It's honestly not even something worth constantly bitching about for years on a Trek BBS. Why people feel such a need to do so is beyond me.

Because it looks awful, plus, with the big ass budget the film had, a decent engineering set could have been made. The brewery makes me feel JJ was either cheap, lazy, or thinking the innards of all vessels, sailing or space, are going to look the same for centuries. I mean even Archer's engineering area looked more advanced and less cumbersome than JJ's, which is more like Axis Chemicals than the supposed Enterprise's engine rooms. Plus I did not see any effort to even hide the fact it's brewery, brewing tanks and cinder block walls and all.

Dukhat, the brewery, I think, will be a piece of ridicule and amusement in Trek history, up along the likes of the entire concept of "Code of Honor", the phallic rock in "What are little girls made of?", TNG sets on ST6, Crosby's acting in season 1 of TNG, and "cupcake" and Scotty's goblin sidekick in JJ's film.

He was the best part of the film!

Seriously though, your take on what's wrong with the Brewery Deck is spot-on, and I couldn't agree more. I don't mind the idea of the industrial look, save for the fact it looks late 20th century and not 23rd century. It looks like what it is - a brewery.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Because it looks awful...

Really? Because I didn't even notice it when I saw the film in the theater. It was only when people here pointed it out that I even knew about it. And it certainly didn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie upon repeated viewings.

I'll admit that it would have been nice to have a really cool futuristic-looking engine room for the minute or so out of the entire film's running time that we saw it. But I'm sure JJ felt that it would have been a waste of budget dollars to build such a set when we only saw it for a few seconds, and then maybe three minutes tops when Kirk and Scotty beam aboard.

That's the thing, though: There's a world of difference between ridicule and amusement, and downright vitriol about an insignificant piece of Trek history. If someone wants to have a chuckle about the brewery set, fine. I've even joked about it myself in the "Budweiser's Back" thread. But it didn't completely ruin my enjoyment of the film, and certainly doesn't warrant such idiotic rants as what it's been given by some people here. Yeah, I think "Code of Honor" was stupid too, but I don't constantly post on the TNG forum that I think it's a piece of shit that totally ruined my enjoyment of TNG for years afterward. Because it didn't. And I wouldn't do so even if it had.

You want to know what I think? I think that ST '09 haters just focus on the brewery in order to bitch for the sake of bitching. Just like that William Wallace guy who joined the TrekBBS solely for the sake of pointing out insignificant "plot holes" in the movie, and then promptly disappeared once he couldn't do it anymore. It gets really old really fast.

Yea, I didn't know I was supposed to hate the Brewery Engine Room when I saw it in the theater, nor when I have rewatched it on DVD. It's only the last few months, I've been reading the comments over here that I have learned I am supposed to hate it <Bad Trek Fan :alienblush: >

Well, a lot of us '09 lovers hate that brewery also.

If people can't see the difference in those two sets of pictures, they're denser than I thought.

One is cluttered all to hell, the other is slick, clean and organized. One looks like a brewery, the other like the engine room of a 23rd century starship.

Because it looks awful...

Nah, just mildly silly in some shots.

...with the big ass budget the film had, a decent engineering set could have been made.

They spent the money on stuff that mattered more.

Dukhat, the brewery, I think, will be a piece of ridicule and amusement in Trek history, up along the likes of the entire concept of "Code of Honor", the phallic rock in "What are little girls made of?", TNG sets on ST6, yada yada...

IOW, pointless and trivial in-jokes amongst a few nerds.

Thank you. I have to repost this for it's obvious truth. I thought exactly the same when I was in cinema: Wow, they really went back to that 60ies concept, great idea. Of course, a couple of weeks after that, the internet told me it was a bad idea, because Engineering never looked that way. :cardie:

I always saw the TOS set as the monitoring stations of the engines. A few key access points but for the most part (like say a nuclear reactor) the power generation is keep away from the crew unless they really had to climb into the guts of the engines and deal with a serious issue.

The '09 set, soon as I saw it, it screamed out as a modern day municipal plant (I was thinking water treatment plant, found out it was a brewery later) not a engine. It's one of those things (for me) that is sort of dead stop moment of "Hey, WTF?"
